Today we’d like to introduce you to Conrad Wright.
Hi Conrad, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started out making t-shirts from home in 2006 then one day a friend of mines told me about a guy who had a t-shirt shop and was trying to retire. He was looking for someone to pass the business onto. I went to visit this shop my friend was talking about. The name of the business was Ted’s Screen Printers. Ted taught me everything I needed to know about the t-shirt business. I worked for him for about two years before he retired.
I was excited and nervous at the same time. Excited because this was my chance to elevate and become a certified businessman. Nervous because I was representing Ted and try to fill his shoes. It wasn’t easy at all but I succeeded. I moved from the location and bought my own building that I’m currently working out of now. The business is located in the urban core. A place where most people wouldn’t have taken a chance to relocate. I felt like the inner city needed me and plus there weren’t any other t-shirt businesses in the area.
Since then, I have been teaching youth in the area how to make t-shirts. I’ve also been to schools teaching entrepreneurship and collaborating with organizations within the community. December 2nd, 2020 I was shot and as a result of that, I became paralyzed from the waist down. Once I got out of the hospital I went back to doing what I love. Making t-shirts. I haven’t let my disability stop me. I’m continuing to pursue my dreams.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, the road has been a roller-coaster. From my business partner giving up and going to get a job leaving more work for me to do and responsible for all the bills. Becoming paralyzed has been my challenge.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I offer screen printing services, embroidery, sublimation as well as graphic design and photography. My work can be seen all over the city from t-shirts to billboards. I can do just about anything.
Any big plans?
I plan on turning my building into a media center. Continue to teach entrepreneurship. Passing the business on to someone younger like I was taught.
