Inspiring Conversations with Cheri Regis of Cheri Regis Works

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheri Regis.

Hi Cheri, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In terms of my creative journey, I really didn’t start anything. I just learned how to draw through my mom and her drawing class that she had to take during her undergrad. Today, thanks to her and my own art classes, I’ve never looked back!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a varied road, some ups and some downs. The ups were that I got exposed to fine art at the early age of 10, met some incredible artists that ended up giving me lessons and gaining trust and recognition from my community. The downs were, at that time, there was very little opportunity for me to showcase my work, having to navigate several life transitions in a short period of time and going back to college after several gap years. But the road has been varied, to say the least.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am the founder of my namesake Cheri Regis Works, which is a freelance art, craft and design studio specializing in modern and contemporary drawing, painting, textile art and heirloom crafts. My practice is known and regarded for toy design, with an emphasis on sustainability and heritage. What I am most proud about my brand is that it’s a manifestation of what I’ve known and experienced since that encounter in my mom’s drawing class. So, by extension, my brand also represents my family and childhood.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The number of people who spurred me on is too much to count! But if I had to narrow it down to several people, it would be my family, my close friends, everyone in my high school, community college and (currently) my undergrad. From planning and design to research, everyone plays a part in my practice!
