Inspiring Conversations with Casey Rhoads of Honey Bee Pediatric Dental Co. and Kansas City Tongue Tie Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Rhoads

Hi Casey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Dr. Casey Rhoads and Dr. Rebecca Ferns worked together as associate dentists at a pediatric dental practice in the Kansas City area. It was there that they decided they wanted to start their own practice where they could develop their dream pediatric dental practice that focused on patient experience and developing a positive work culture. Dr. Becca had just had her first child and Dr. Casey was pregnant with her third child when they decided to make the leap.

We officially opened the doors of our first practice in Lawrence, Kansas in December or 2022 with a team of four. We were nervous for this jump but we were certain it would be successful. After many ups and downs and countless learning opportunities, today we now have a second practice in Lenexa that we opened in May of 2023 and an incredible team of 27!

The name of our practice is called Honey Bee Pediatric Dental Co. We chose the name Honey Bee for many reasons. First, we wanted the name to signify something “local” and the Honeybee is the state insect of Kansas. Honey Bees also symbolizes many things that we hold dear such as a strong work ethic, community, sweetness, growth, devotion, and God’s Blessings. We always wanted “Co.” in our name, not because we are a company, but because we are a community. We want everyone who comes through our doors to feel like they are part of our “Co.”!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No! But it has been fun and we would do it all over again. The initial struggles were certainly financial, we were naïve to how much money it takes to start a dental practice at the caliber we wanted to provide to our patients. We also were very nervous of how long it would take to grow a patient base. We were fortunate enough that we had a good number of previous families that found us after we left and followed us to our new practice, to which we are forever grateful!

The hardest part, besides learning the business side of things, has been finding our dream team! We are fortunate enough to have an amazing team right now but that came after a lot of trial and error. This is something we continue to try and build on to make each of our team members find JOY and a HOME when they are at work. We strive to make every team member feel valued at Honey Bee!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Honey Bee Pediatric Dental Co. and Kansas City Tongue Tie Co.?
Honey Bee PDC is a pediatric dental practice where we focus on giving children and parents/guardians an experience where the leave saying “I can’t wait to go back!” We know the dental office can be a scary place for a child and induce anxiety in their parents as well. Our goal is to make sure they all feel comfortable, heard, and loved in our office. Each appointment is individuated to each child based on their age, needs, and personality. Our team is well trained in not only how to complete dental tasks, but also in how to communicate with the child so they feel like the dental office is an event, not just an appointment! Dr. Becca and Dr. Casey love making children laugh and helping parents know their options when it comes to their child’s care.

Honey Bee offers comprehensive pediatric dental care to patients ages 0-18. We also offer different types of sedations for our anxious patients such as nitrous oxide, conscious oral sedation, deep IV sedation, and general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Dr. Becca and Dr. Casey have recently been invited to join the incredible Cleft Palate team at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. In the next year, they will be joining them to bring a comprehensive team approach to the families affected by cleft lip and palate!

In 2023, they also started a practice within our practice called Kansas City Tongue Tie Co. Both Dr. Casey and Dr. Becca had babies that struggled with lip and tongue ties that make their breastfeeding journeys difficult. At the time, there were not many providers in the KC area that provided this service with the CO2 laser, which is the golden standard for lip and tongue revisions in their minds. And to top it off, they were not aware of many (or any) providers that were not only females, but moms who have been through the same procedures with their babies. Lip and tongue tie revisions were something they had learned in residency, but it went by the wayside at their associateship. So they dedicated themselves to relearning everything they could about the topic and taking as much CE they could get their hands on before providing the service. This has been such a fun and exciting venture. They have helped countless babies, children, and adults in their journey and the results have been astounding.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
We listen to some dental and dental business podcasts here and there but not huge podcast people. We are constantly taking CE where there are online modules. We would love to be able to read more for our home life, but Dr. Casey has 3 kids 6 and under and Dr. Becca has 2 kids under 3 so between spending time with them and running a business, we don’t have much time for leisure reading.
