Inspiring Conversations with Caitlin Wise of designwise KC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Wise.

Hi Caitlin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my career in event planning for various universities and non-profits. After nearly a decade working as a planner, I wanted to move to the vendor side of events as a way to flex my creative muscle more. I really enjoy creating custom and personal “moments” for my own events, and I love being able to tie a theme into the smallest details of an event. I realized I could help create those moments for others, and so designwise KC was born.

I started designwise KC just over a year ago as an Etsy shop with personalized event decor and favors, and now I create larger event installations, like photo backdrops, in the Kansas City area.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all! For starters, when I invested in my laser cutter, it was broken right out of the box. That took over a month to correct, which slowed a lot of things down after I had spent months preparing for its arrival.

When it comes to creating custom decor and backdrops, I’m almost always starting from scratch, so there’s always a lot of trial and error along the way.

Learning new software and how to work with different materials can be challenging, too.

As you know, we’re big fans of designwise KC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
designwise KC delivers custom backdrops, decor, and designs for all types of events. Our goal is to help your ideas, no matter how big or small, come to life. We love working with clients that are looking for a unique moment to help their event stand out, even if they’re not sure exactly what that is.

Any time we create a custom backdrop, we give our clients the opportunity to either buy the backdrop outright or let us keep it as a future rental. We now have a handful of rentals available from our previous events, like our gold shimmer wall, our pink and coral flower wall, and our pink and silver fringe wall.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I adore Kansas City. I think the energy KC has, especially around its sports teams, is second-to-none.
