Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianne Atkinson.
Hi Brianne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thank you so much for considering me. I had a great childhood with two loving parents who cultivated all my gifts and talents at a young age. As a young artist who loved drawing and painting, I also played violin and piano and sang in choir most of my childhood. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I considered cosmetology a career. I had always done hair for my friends and family just for fun, but I dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. I decided to take the route with the least amount of school time. It was then that I realized that cosmetology was my passion, and I’ve been in the beauty industry for over 25 years.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It, by all means, has not been a smooth journey, but well worth it. When I decided to start my beauty business, there weren’t as many resources as now. Scaling was dependent on word-of-mouth, flyers, and business cards. I had no mentors to take me under their wing; it was strictly trial and error. Now that I have established my business, I feel called to mentor up-and-coming entrepreneurs in and outside the beauty industry.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In 2019, I decided to rebrand the business and start a hair care line called A Piece of Mint, which now has been shipped to all 50 states. I’ve learned over the years to niche down to what I enjoy, which is creative color, and to produce healthy colors without interfering with the integrity of the hair. Outside of managing the hair care line and behind the chair, I created a book for up-and-coming entrepreneurs. The title is “So you’ve graduated now what?” It is a resource guide for newly graduated cosmetologists entering the professional world.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
God has blessed me with a thriving business, and I’ve been honored to work with many people from all over the country. I am a domestic violence survivor and the mother of a sickle cell warrior. If God calls you to a thing, he can complete it. I want to encourage someone never to give up on yourself.
