Inspiring Conversations with Brett Fuller of The WellSky Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Fuller.

Hi Brett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The WellSky Foundation began in 2019, rooted in a belief that has long been part of WellSky’s identity as a company—that we have both the opportunity and the responsibility to do more in the communities we serve.

From the very beginning, WellSky has been driven by a mission to improve care, and we recognized that impact shouldn’t stop at the point of care. We saw an opportunity to extend that mission beyond our technology and services and into direct, meaningful community support.

The foundation was created to bring that belief to life, channeling our collective passion into action—especially for the most vulnerable populations. From the start, we grounded our work in the social determinants of health, recognizing that true well-being goes far beyond clinical care.

What’s been most inspiring is how our teammates have rallied around this mission. Year after year, we’ve grown—not just in dollars raised, but in impact. To date, we’ve donated nearly $4 million to more than 40 organizations, each one doing critical work in their communities.

For me, the story of the foundation isn’t just about growth in numbers. It’s about what’s possible when people come together with purpose—and the real, lasting difference that can create in the lives of others.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In many ways, our biggest challenge came right at the beginning. We launched the foundation in 2019, and just months later, the world changed with COVID-19.

As a new foundation, we relied heavily on community-building events like our gala and golf tournament to raise funds and awareness. Suddenly, those plans were put on hold, and we had to rethink how we showed up, stayed connected, and continued supporting our partners during a time when needs were actually increasing.

That moment forced us to be more creative and more intentional. It pushed us to find new ways to engage our teams and communicate our mission, even without the in-person moments we had planned.

Another ongoing challenge has been making sure we’re effectively telling our story. When you’re doing meaningful work, it’s critical that people understand the impact—not just to build support, but to honor the organizations and individuals we serve. We’ve continued to evolve in how we share those stories and connect people to the mission.

Looking back, those challenges really shaped us. They made us more resilient, more thoughtful, and ultimately more committed to growing our impact in ways that go beyond any single event or moment.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The WellSky Foundation ?
At the WellSky Foundation, the work begins with a simple but powerful belief: health doesn’t start in a doctor’s office. It’s shaped by the conditions of everyday life—whether someone has enough to eat, a safe place to sleep, reliable transportation, or meaningful human connection. With that in mind, the foundation has focused its efforts on four critical drivers of well-being: food insecurity, transportation, isolation, and housing.

This focus is more than strategic—it’s deeply practical. By centering on these pillars, the foundation is able to support a wide network of community organizations doing essential, hands-on work. That means showing up in many different ways: stocking food pantries, supporting transitional housing programs, serving older adults, and reaching individuals experiencing homelessness. The goal is to meet people where they are, at multiple points in their lives, and help create stability where it’s needed most.

The impact is tangible.

Through a partnership with Pete’s Garden, the foundation supports the Kids Feeding Kids program, which will deliver more than 20,000 meals to families this year. At Amethyst Place, funding helped furnish 75 bedrooms—providing children and families with something as fundamental as a bed of their own. And with Care Beyond the Boulevard, a newly funded medical bus is expanding access to street medicine, bringing care directly to individuals experiencing homelessness.

But the work doesn’t stop at meeting immediate needs. Increasingly, the foundation is investing in what comes next. In April, new technology centers and digital literacy programs launched in partnership with reStart and Sheffield Place. These initiatives are designed to equip individuals with the tools and skills needed to pursue stable employment and long-term housing.

With support from Great Jobs KC, participants now have access to resources that can open doors—everything from setting up an email account to searching for jobs, connecting with healthcare services, and taking those critical first steps toward independence.

Because sometimes, opportunity starts small. A login. A resume. A connection.
From there, the vision grows: individuals gaining confidence alongside capability, building skills, securing employment, and creating sustainable careers.

None of this happens in isolation. Behind the scenes, a dedicated group of WellSky employees has volunteered time and expertise to bring initiatives like the SkyBridge Technology Center to life—turning ideas into action and vision into measurable impact.

What ultimately sets the WellSky Foundation apart is its dual focus: addressing urgent, real-world needs while also investing in long-term pathways forward. It’s not just about responding to today’s challenges—it’s about helping people build healthier, more stable futures for tomorrow.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing that might surprise people is that our work isn’t just about writing checks—it’s really about showing up.

While we’re proud of the financial support we provide, we have an equally strong belief in giving our time. Through the WellSky Foundation, we organize quarterly volunteer efforts across the country, meeting communities where our teammates live and work and giving the 3,000 WellSky teammates the opportunity to get directly involved with local partners.

What that means is you’ll find our teams not just funding organizations, but packing meals, setting up housing spaces, supporting local programs, and working side-by-side with the people they’re helping—in cities and towns across the U.S. It creates a much deeper connection to the work and the impact.

At the end of the day, our goal is to help build stronger communities—and we believe that happens not just through dollars given, but through people showing up, consistently, to make a difference.
