Inspiring Conversations with Ashley Whisler of Crabtree Law Office

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Whisler.

Hi Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in the heart of Kansas City in a single-father household, with my grandparents playing a significant role in raising me. I was given responsibilities at a young age, including helping care for my younger siblings. In many ways, I learned to take care of others before I had fully figured out how to take care of myself.

I moved out at 17 and began building an independent life. I worked, paid my own bills, and eventually became a mother in my early twenties. My son became the center of my world, and I worked hard to provide what I could. For about eight years, I bartended while raising him. I was content with the life I had built, but eventually, I started asking myself: can I be more?

I had always wanted to help people, and I was fascinated by the legal system. Even though my interactions with the law were limited, I found it all so intimidating. I understood how overwhelming it felt to navigate a system you don’t understand while going through a loss, or a life-changing experience. I wanted to be someone who could help people find their way through it.

When I learned that my local community college offered a paralegal program, I decided to pursue it. I put myself through school while working, parent duties, managing a household, and caring for other children. I graduated with my associate degree in paralegal studies during COVID. It was a milestone I had worked incredibly hard to reach, and although I didn’t get the traditional celebration due to the pandemic restrictions, I knew what it had taken to get there.

Today, I’ve spent seven years as a paralegal and office manager at Crabtree Law Office in Overland Park. I have built a career I genuinely love. When I look back, I don’t necessarily see someone who had everything figured out, but someone who kept taking the next step.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not!
One of my biggest challenges has been balancing my own goals with the commitments with the people in my life.

When my grandmother passed away, I was bartending, and began questioning whether I was proud of the direction my life was taking. I was working hard to keep everything going, but I realized that being able to get through each day wasn’t the same as thriving. I decided I was capable of more and needed to give myself the opportunity to find out what that looked like.

While in pursuit of a paralegal associate degree, I was working multiple jobs: managing a household, parenting, nannying, fostering children, and working various positions at my local YMCA. As well as the jobs I was involved in my children’s PTA committee helping create opportunities and memories for children and their families; as well as organizing and participating in the YMCA events. Needless to say, there wasn’t a lot of downtime, and I often had to figure things out as I went.

I still remember one night during final exams. I worked a morning shift at the YMCA, the children I nannied were picked up for the day, all the children in my care were fed, bathed, and settled for the evening, and finally had a moment to myself. I took a six-minute nap before logging on to take my final exam. Looking back, it astounds me to think that felt like a normal day!

Those years taught me how to prioritize, adapt, and keep moving toward a goal even when life wasn’t a walk the park. I learned to make progress in the middle of a full life, and that is something I still carry with me today.

As you know, we’re big fans of Crabtree Law Office. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Crabtree Law Office is a personal injury law firm in Overland Park, Kansas, serves individuals and families throughout Kansas and Missouri. Our firm focuses on helping people navigate some of the most difficult and life-changing experiences they may ever face, including personal injury, medical malpractice, nursing home negligence, and wrongful death cases.

As a paralegal and office manager, I get to see firsthand the work, dedication, and compassion from our entire firm that goes into helping our clients.

What sets our firm apart? We understand there is a real person and a real family behind every case. These are people deserve to feel heard, respected, and supported throughout the legal process.

That is one of the things I am most proud of about our firm. We are not simply focused on the outcome of a case; we care about the people who entrust us with it. We believe that the way you treat people matters just as much as the work you do on their behalf.

After seven years with Crabtree Law Office, I am proud to be part of a team that remains true to this philosophy. Our brand is ultimately about trust, compassion, and standing up for people when they need someone in their corner. I want readers to know that behind the legal work, there is a team of people who genuinely care about making a positive difference in the lives of everyone we serve.

What matters most to you?
Family has always been at the center of my life. After my grandmothers’ passing, I took on organizing our family’s major holidays because I wanted to preserve those traditions and make sure we continued creating memories together. When my brother was hospitalized in the ICU for an extended period of time, I organized a Thanksgiving dinner in the hospital waiting room, with the help of my family, so we could still gather around him. Those experiences reflect something that matters deeply to me: showing up for people when life takes the dark turn.

My husband, Adam, and my son are also a huge part of who I am and the decisions I make every day.

Adam has been an important part of my life for nearly 20 years. His love and support has helped me grow into the woman I am today.

My son inspires me to keep challenging myself. I want him to see that you do not have to have your entire life figured out to build something meaningful. You can change directions, make mistakes, and start over. What matters is that you keep working toward your goals, and believing you are capable.

That lesson has become just as important in my relationship with myself. For a long time, I underestimated what I was capable of doing. I eventually reached a point where I had to ask myself what was stopping me from pursuing more. Going back to school, building a career I love, and navigating the responsibilities that came with those decisions taught me to trust myself in ways I had not before. I am proud not only of what I have accomplished, but also of the confidence I have gained along the way.

Professionally, I am proud that I turned an interest in the legal system into a career that gives me a sense of purpose. I earned it all of it. It was not a traditional or easy path, but I kept moving forward, and today I get to do work that aligns with my desire to help people.

I have also learned that growth does not stop once you reach a goal. Even though my life looks different now than it did when I was juggling multiple jobs and raising children, I still want to challenge myself and find new ways to contribute. I am learning Spanish so I can continue expanding my ability to connect with members of our community, staying committed to my health and fitness journey, volunteering with organizations that provide food to people experiencing homelessness, and exploring marketing and creative projects for Crabtree Law Office and my parents’ business, Spotted Feather Studio.

Ultimately, what matters most to me is family, personal growth, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I want my life, my work and my actions to leave something positive behind.

I think that is one of the greatest lessons life has taught me: we cannot always choose what happens to us, but we can choose how we respond, how we show up for ourselves and the people around us, and the legacy we leave behind.
