Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Hyken-Lande.
Hi Amy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story started a long time ago, but not in a galaxy far, far away! I was born and raised in Overland Park, and have never left (except when I moved to Lawrence for college). I have always been fascinated with how the brain works, helping others (especially children) and the study of psychology. I was the friend who everyone went to for advice. I use to joke that I should wear a sign (like Lucy….from peanuts) around my neck, charging .05 for advice. I always knew what I wanted to be when “I grew up” (I utilize play therapy every day, so I am still a kid at heart). I attended the University of Kansas for undergrad, and received a B.A. with a focus on Child Psychology. I continued with my education, obtaining a Masters in Clinical Social work and after many hours of supervision, my LSCSW (and was certified as a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist). I also began training in play therapy.I went from working at an inpatient facility to a group practice and finally, started my own practice (KIDS INC KC). But I wasn’t finished…as I am kind of an overachiever. One of my specialties is working with children and families of divorce. I have a history of working closely with the courts and legal system, and I have seen so many children struggle through their parents divorce. This led me to my role as Clinical Director of The Layne Project 4 families. The founder and I had the same mission, helping children and families who were going through this difficult process. I was able to balance my private practice, and come on board with this agency (which is now a non-profit, one of my goals when I started there). But wait…there is more. My side hustle is animal rescue (I get paid in wet kisses)! I had just dropped of one of my foster kittens at a local vet, and I drove past this beautiful house in downtown Overland park, across from the park. There was a “for rent” sign on it….which was my “sign” to contact the owner and make one of my dreams come true! Harmony House was born! We are a collective of therapists (play, art, somatic, CBT, ACT and EMDR trained) who work with children (as young as 3) through adolescencence. I personally specialize in working with children and families of divorce, reintegration and co-parenting therapy, trauma, anxiety and adhd. I was raised with the philosophy of “Tikkun Olam” (the Hebrew phrase meaning repair the world), and now that I had a house full of helpers…I wanted to collaborate with the community. In May, we had our first Wellness Fair (which was also a benefit for a local animal rescue). My plan is to continue to work with other healers and charities in the community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
What would life be like without struggles!? Yes, I have had some struggles but I have also learned from them. Thirteen years ago, I went through my own Divorce. As a single-mom (I had a strong co-parent relationship with my son’s father…yes, I practice what I preach) in private practice, I had to learn learn the “business” side of owning my own practice. That is not something that they teach in college. I knew that I had to rely on one (instead of two) incomes. I researched and read everything plus, I picked the brains of those already in private practice. Further (here comes the overachiever in me), I created a class on starting your own practice as well as, wrote a chapter in the book, The Administrative Challenges of Play Therapy.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about KIDS INC KC and Harmony House Collective?
As stated before, I wear several hats (they may all look a little different, but they are a perfect fit)! I am the owner of KIDS INC KC and Harmony House Collective. I am also the Clinical Director of 4 Families. One of my duties at 4 Families, is to supervise other therapists. I have a passion for helping others, so this is one of my favorite responsibilities. I have been in practice for over 20 years as an LSCSW, CBT and a member of AFCC (Association of family and conciliation courts). I am trained in play therapy, CBT, ACT and trauma-informed care. I think what sets me apart from others, is my passion for working with littles. It is amazing to witness their curiosity and be invited to experience their world. I really feel like I am able to make a positive impact on their lives. Another strength, is my knowledge (both personal and professional) of working with families who are going through a Divorce. When I get a referral that states, “these parents are going through a tumultuous divorce”, I am always up the challenge. There CAN be a good divorce, and if handled properly, children can be resilient and successful. I also work well with court system and understand those dynamics (as I am a CIT, court involved therapist).
I love all the professional hats that I wear however, I am most proud of starting Harmony House Collective. It aligns with my personal values of having a shared mission and being able to collaborate with other professionals and charities in the community.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I think one of the most important lessons I have learned is that everyone’s journey is unique and sometimes you have to color outside the lines. I realize that I can’t do it all (even though I would like to), and so I need to set firm boundaries (which is often a challenge for my personality). I strive to prioritize self-care, listen to my gut and set limits. I have to remind myself that “No” is a compete sentence.
