Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Alcala.
Alexis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always known I wanted to be my own boss. The idea of having flexibility, independence, and the freedom to call the shots has always been something that excited me.
Back in 2021, I got engaged to my now-husband, Jeff, and we planned our entire wedding in just 10 months. During that time, I completely fell in love with the wedding world—the amazing vendors I got to meet, the creativity behind the design elements, and all the personal touches that made the day feel uniquely us. It really opened my eyes to how special and meaningful this industry can be.
That experience lit a fire in me, and I decided to take a big leap and start my own business—Jaded Events. Honestly, I had no idea if I’d be any good at wedding planning, but I was determined to give it my all. I started by taking on a few weddings for free in exchange for reviews, just to get my foot in the door. And from there, it’s grown into something way bigger than I ever expected.
Fast forward to today—we’re now in our third year of business with a team of nine, over 100 weddings under our belt, and so many lessons learned along the way. We offer full-service wedding planning, coordination, rentals, and more. It’s been an amazing ride so far, and I’m just really proud of what we’ve built.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—working with the public always comes with its challenges—but we truly feel lucky with every new connection we make through Jaded Events.
One of the biggest hurdles early on was feeling like a little fish in a big pond. Kansas City might not be a massive city, but the wedding industry here is booming, and there’s no shortage of talented planners. I knew from the start that breaking into the scene wouldn’t be easy. Thankfully, I connected with some amazing vendor friends and mentors who helped me find my footing—not just in understanding the local industry, but in running a business overall.
Another major challenge was realizing pretty quickly that I couldn’t do it all on my own. We launched in July 2022, and by January 2023 I was already hiring. Planning weddings is definitely not a one-person job—it’s way easier (and way more fun!) with a team. Our ultimate goal at Jaded Events has always been to help as many couples as we can have the best day ever, and that’s a big part of why our team has grown so much in just a few years.
Every wedding teaches us something new. We take those lessons, grow from them, and are constantly evolving thanks to the hands-on experiences and honest feedback from our couples. It’s all part of the journey, and we’re so grateful for it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I naturally gravitated toward leadership roles. As the oldest of four, being in charge just kind of came with the territory. I was always the one organizing things, keeping everyone on track—it just felt like second nature.
And while I didn’t end up becoming a teacher or a professional sports athlete, a lot of the same elements can be applied to the events we manage. Wedding days are full of moving parts, and as planners, we’re the ones making sure everything runs smoothly. Organization is key, and just like in sports, it takes a strong team to pull it all off—both within our own team and alongside all the amazing vendors we work with.
I carry a lot of the lessons I learned growing up into how I run my business today. From leadership to collaboration to staying calm under pressure—it’s all helped shape the way I approach each event and every couple we work with.
