Today we’d like to introduce you to Abbie Kummer, LMFT.
Hi Abbie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
“As you walk the path, the path will appear,” – Rumi. This quote reminds me that the combination of belief and determination allow us to reach our full potential. Growing up I found a lot of purpose in helping others, but I wasn’t sure exactly how that would manifest into a career. After receiving my bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Science from Kansas State University, the path felt more defined – I had more knowledge and was better equip to help – but was still unclear. So I continued to walk, working full time before returning to K-State to get my Master’s degree in Couple and Family Therapy. As I began working with clients, my path became clear. Sitting with others in their most difficult moments, being witness to their pain, sorrow, tears, joy, insights, and so much more brought and still brings so much purpose to my life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After finishing my Master’s degree, I moved to Kansas City to start my next chapter, not knowing where my path would lead. As I started the interview process I looked for a group practice or community mental health center to start working with clients. However the more I looked, the more I felt like I wasn’t able to find what I was looking for. I wanted a space that felt less clinical and more approachable. I wanted a space that felt like a deep breath as soon as you sat down. I wanted a space that was transparent and made therapy approachable for anyone regardless of their past experiences with therapy or mental health. So instead of joining another therapy practice, I decided to start my own. I created Therapy Talks to make therapy feel less scary and more approachable, because we all deserve a safe space to land. Becoming a business owner has been such an incredible learning experience, and given me the opportunity to do things my way. I’ve been able to meet and work with so many other incredible business owners in Kansas City. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful community of helping professionals that put others first. Since starting Therapy Talks, my path is clear and my mission has become even clearer.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Therapy Talks LLC?
Therapy Talks is a private practice focused on providing mental health services to adult individuals, couples, and families. I am passionate about working with clients to improve overall wellbeing, create healthy relationships, and to uncover the best version of you. I also am passionate about helping clients process grief and trauma, as these are things that impact us and our relationships deeply. As a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist I work from a systems perspective. This means that when you come to therapy I’m not just looking at you. I’m looking at the systems you are a part of like your romantic and family relationships, work and social environments, friend groups, etc. to see how all of these thing effect you and how you can make adjustments to create the life you want. Change is possible and you are worthy of it.
What matters most to you? Why?
Breaking the stigma around mental health is incredibly important to me. Coming from a small town in Northwest Kansas, I understand the stigma that mental health comes with and how scary it can be to ask for help. Making mental health and mental health topics available and accessible in day to day life is crucial to improving not only us as individuals, but us as a collective. Incorporating mental health in our homes, our jobs, our circle of friends, and our communities allows us to show genuine care for one another on a deeper level than the classic “I’m fine, how are you?” Not only do I incorporate mental health topics into my work with clients, I also speak about mental health topics with groups and organizations by providing psycho-education on emotion regulation, communication skills, conflict resolution, and more.
