Hidden Gems: Meet Wamda Abreesh of Two Niles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wamda Abreesh.

Hi Wamda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Where I’m from there’s an old folk practice where mothers bury the umbilical cords of their children where they want them to prosper. And because of that, our story started from the roots.

When I was born my mother took my cut umbilical cord and buried it in the ground where the healers of the community healed, this was known as one of the best “hospitals” in the city where I was born.

Growing up Sudanese allowed me the benefit of watching the elders in our village whip up remedies with plants. No matter the condition, there was always a solution from the earth. This fascinated me from a young age, so naturally, I spent a lot of time around my elders, learning from and practicing with them. As I got older, anytime a friend or family member struggled with an issue they’d call me up and I’d custom make a solution for them.

With the knowledge passed down from my ancestors, I was able to help folks with various issues, ranging from troubled skin to painful toothache. My inspiration came from the same herbs and oils of my Sudanese upbringing. In our household food is medicine, so it came naturally in so many ways. For years, I studied the craft of herbalism heavily.

My loved ones began passing on my information to people they knew, folks started paying for my services and I was able to quit my job in the service industry to dedicate my time fully to helping folks through my passion for herbs. Here I am in 2021, with a team dedicated to providing healthy, plant-based alternatives to self-care products, moving into a warehouse, and successfully running a 6 figure business all with the help of the community behind us.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been tough, been even more rewarding. Any challenges we’ve faced, we’ve done so with resilience and the support of our family and community. Every phase of growing our family business brings new challenges, and new lessons to learn.

We’ve recently moved our business online and that has brought its own challenges, especially in regards to scaling every aspect of our business. We’re having to revamp and change a lot of things around, and where we once had to cater to 100 people, we are not catering to 1,000+, which has been a rewarding challenge.

As you know, we’re big fans of Two Niles Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We make natural, plant-based alternatives to everyone’s favorite self-care products., including Sea Moss supplements, Herbal tonics, Body Scrubs, Body Butters, etc. We are proud to push products that do not include preservatives, unnecessary dyes, fillers, or binders. We are coming through to nourish, rejuvenate, educate and uplift our communities.

All of our ingredients are intentional. We are most proud of our supportive customer base, our unparalleled customer service, and our life-changing products!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice just starts! Start with what you have, talk to people in the same industry as you who know more than you. Even if they’re older or younger than you. Even if their background is different than yours. You will be surprised how many dots connect for you when you meet the right people. If you don’t like talking to people, work on it.

Force yourself if you need to, it will DEFINITELY pay off. You’ll need people for any business to prosper. Read books and podcasts that relate to your craft. Watch interviews. Study the greats who did what you’re trying to do. Think for yourself and try to improve whatever field you’re in. Traditional ideas with a fresh modern twist are a WIN!
