Hidden Gems: Meet Victoria Weber of Nettle + Honey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Weber.

Hi Victoria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Nettle + Honey was born after the birth of my first son five years ago. His birth was wild and intense and threw me deeply in the birth world trying to figure out what had HAPPENED to me. I had prepared greatly, just as so many of us do, for the pregnancy and the birth but did very little preparation for what to expect postpartum. Even with all the support of my husband and my mom, I was still taken aback at this new transformation of myself from woman to mother. I also had deep grief of the way my birth turned out and no tools to cope.

I had always worked in restaurants and have a deep love of food + its medicinal properties. But as this new mother, there was no way I was going back to managing restaurants, late into the night upwards of 80 hours per week. I have always wanted to run my own business and I thought that would be a traditional restaurant, but Nettle + Honey is so much more.

I honestly thought I had created the role of a postpartum doula! I didn’t know it existed! I enrolled in a birth doula course and thought I’d have my own spin on things. I would support the mother AFTER birth! There still aren’t enough postpartum doulas but there certainly is a wonderful doula community here in Kansas City.

I grew up with natural living and knowing that the earth is our greatest healer. My grandmother + my mother instilled this in me from my own birth. We know that food is medicine and nurturing to the physical and the emotional body if we use the best ingredients made with love + care. It was second nature to me to create a menu that was supportive of the postpartum time. Rich bone broths + stews with warming spices like turmeric + ginger create a nurturing platform for the body to heal.

Nettle + Honey has become the embodiment of support + nurturing. We not only make and deliver food to pregnant + postpartum mothers but provide in-home postpartum care, birth doula, perinatal yoga, support groups, have an online shop that ships nationwide, cater private events, and offer nutritional consults for pregnancy, postpartum + babies.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming a mother + developing your own business certainly comes with challenges! It’s taken me some time to figure out the best boundaries so that my health + family don’t ever fall behind the needs of my clients. There have been years of being on call 24/7 that can take a toll. When I was pregnant with my second baby, I was attending all night births, caring for twins overnight several times per week and still nursing my toddler. It was too much. I tend to want to “do it all”, but I’ve come to realize I certainly CAN, but I don’t have to. And I realize at times, I need to listen to my own advice and just stop… snuggle up in my bed with my babies, or take a long hot bath, or go get a massage, or make a nurturing meal. The more that we nurture ourselves, the more we can nurture others.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nettle + Honey LLC?
Nettle + Honey is a wellness business in support of mothers. We offer home delivery of organic nurturing foods and a myriad of support during pregnancy + postpartum. My husband Nathaniel was able to leave his job last year + join my team, thank goodness! He’s a better chef than I am! His intricate knowledge of food, beverage + creating tinctures has added great depth to our business. We have several clients that order custom meals from us every week. We boast the ability to create delicious + nutritious meals for anyone with any dietary restriction. However, I believe this to be easy when we are creating meals from whole real foods of the best quality.

Our business has grown exponentially not because of great marketing or social media strategies but because people FEEL BETTER when they are supported + nurtured and that buys you clients for life.

We offer several items that ship nationwide, although our freshly cooked meals are available only in Kansas City. We have a Friday Night Supper Club with an ever-changing menu open to any + all! Not just new mothers! We prepare lactation bars, teas + medicinals, snacks and fully catered meals. We often host workshops such as gardening + composting and nutrition courses.

I am also a perinatal yoga teacher. We believe that yoga greatly supports preparing the body for birth, aides in an optimal + more comfortable pregnancy, and helps to heal + bond with baby in postpartum.

Yoga classes + birth doula services are partnered with hOMe holistic in Overland Park, Kansas, which adds a never-ending pool of resources for our clients.

Most recently, I have added nutritional consults as a Certified Holistic Nutrition Consultant to guide our clients in the best foods + supplements during pregnancy, postpartum + for babies. We’ll be adding online courses, meal plans and offering a variety of nutritional support for mothers to feel at their best.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I understand that my business is not about me. It’s about fulfilling a need for the people. I love what I do deeply and that helps a lot, but what makes it thrive is that it is essential. When we care for our mothers, we are nurturing our future.
