Hidden Gems: Meet Verlin Hill of VHill Enterprise

Today we’d like to introduce you to Verlin Hill.

Hi Verlin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story begins in the inner city of Kansas City where I grew up on the 1200 block of Woodland St. on the east side of Paseo. I was raised by a village of women I called Mom and Auntie, bouncing from house to house in several different housing developments which also meant attending several different schools in the area, from elementary to high school.

I didn’t finish high school, I only made it to 11th grade before I ended up hustling on the streets to help take care of my family.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The streets kept me always on the go and usually in trouble. My Mama called my Daddy in Arkansas and he sent for me. I took a bus ride to Pine Bluff, AK, and stopped living the city life, but soon found my way back into the wrong crowd and ended up in Juvi for 2 years.

When I was 17, I went back to Kansas City instead of staying in the country. I found my way back to the wrong crowd but this time it was the big leagues and I ended up in the penitentiary at 22 for 120 days and eventually 4 1/2 years because I just didn’t get it right.

I eventually left Kansas and came to Nebraska where I currently live, when I was 26. I got married, built a family, worked several different jobs, and landed a job in 2008 for a company that put me through a training program to learn how to weld. This was the beginning of my welding career.

We’ve been impressed with VHill Enterprise, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
VHill Enterprise was always just a thought in my heart that I wanted to create.

While working a steady job welding, I began doing odd jobs for friends on the side. It didn’t take long, and word of mouth landed me a few more jobs. Small repairs at first and a few exterior railing jobs residentially started the flow but it wasn’t until my friend Derek (D’Love) Jones owner of Gravity Bar in Lincoln, NE called on me to build shelves for the bar he was remodeling, that things changed.

When he needed handrails to fit code for the steps going up to the stage, he called on me. When he needed brackets to slide his glassware under the shelves I built, he called on me. Derek’s bar job was what launched me into making bigger decisions to make VHill be a reality that I had only dreamed about. I made the move to take steps to make my side job into an LLC. and signed up with Angi’s List to get leads.

My first jobs were in Kansas City because I didn’t have a Nebraska contractor’s license, so while I was waiting to obtain it, I went back to the City where I came from that showed me, love. Driving back and forth on the weekends to fulfill jobs that were coming in, I had to make another decision that led me to leave my full-time ten hours a day four days a week job behind and focus 100% on VHill Enterprise.

At VHill, we specialize in exterior railings however we also do home interior staircase installs as well as remodeling staircases to update and modernize homes with iron balusters. In essence, stairs are what we specialize in, but no job is too big or too small for VHill.

What sets us apart from others is that we are a small family business with big ambitions. We pride ourselves on keeping costs down for our clients while attaining their vision for what they want or need. We are creating something for their home or business, and we come to each job as though we were completing it for ourselves and execute it in a timely manner

I am most proud of my name. My name is my brand, I am Verlin D Hill Sr. with a Jr. and my daughter Symara A HIll that one day I will pass the business down to. We will continue to be a family-owned business always striving to meet each client’s vision as they see it at an affordable cost with quality products all built on integrity.
