Today we’d like to introduce you to Stevie Olson-Spiegel.
Hi Stevie , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I became a therapist in 2015 after getting my undergraduate degree in Spanish and traveling around with my husband. I realized that, in order to help people the way I actually wanted to, I needed to go back to school to get my Master’s degree. After graduating, I started working with postpartum women in their homes. While I was helping my clients with their depression, we were also dealing with so much trauma that was getting in the way of making the type of progress that I knew they could make. After seeking somatic therapy myself for my anxiety (which I experienced in such a somatic way), I realized that Somatic Experiencing was going to be a love of mine. I have come to really appreciate the practice of getting out of the mind and working with the nervous system in an organic way in the therapy room. Now, I own my own practice, Embodied Healing, and we help others heal their trauma using somatic therapy. It has been an incredible journey!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If you ask any therapist, becoming a therapist is NOT easy. It takes a Master’s degree, a test, another few years of supervision, and another test, and then applications for your license. This is all to be able to practice independently without a supervisor. Then, you find your specialty which is extra training, time off work, financial investments, and so on. Having my own private practice has been really fun but not without struggles. It can be nerve wracking to trust yourself enough to step out on your own and bring in a steady stream of clients who rely on you to help them with the scariest stuff that’s ever happened to them. I wouldn’t change it for the world, though!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Embodied Healing Collective, LLC?
We are a small private practice in Prairie Village, Kansas. I have a therapist, Lauren Bradley, who is an incredible human being and somatic therapist that works alongside me. We are humans first and practice approachable, evidence-based, somatic therapy. Our goal is to help people tune into their own body and their wisdom in order to heal trauma. We value all people and know that given the safety, support, and guidance, everybody can heal.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I’ve learned to not try to be like other therapists I have learned from or who I have worked with. The therapeutic relationship is the foundation of successful therapy, and that requires me to be myself in the healing space.
