Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Nsoh-Awasom
Hi Laura, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It’s a funny story about how I got into fashion. So it all started in high school when I signed up for extracurricular activities, I signed up for a fashion course thinking it would be all fun and games but in reality, we had to make garments. At first, I wasn’t interested when I realized what the course was about but thankfully one of my instructors encouraged me to proceed with the course. I was only going to take the course for a semester, but as time passed I started enjoying sewing. I ended up taking the course for all four years of high school. By the end of the year, I made a trench coat and a friend of mine already had a fashion business so she encouraged me to join her. Coming out of high school I worked hand-in-hand with her but we later realized our values didn’t match. Unfortunately, we ended up splitting ways in the business and I started Atielah. I have been focused on Atielah since September 2nd, 2023.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth route for sure. I face some struggles when it comes to getting my name out there. I’m still trying to build connections and build brand awareness. With me wanting to focus on an African clothing brand educating people about Africa, it’s hard to involve different cultures and races without them feeling like it’s cultural appropriation. Another thing that’s a struggle is finding the right people that believe in my brand like how I believe in my brand
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Atielah Fashion?
So Atielah is a make-to-order clothing brand that wants to educate different races about Africa, especially Cameroon. A lot of people still have a misconception about what the real Africa is, so this brand was created to educate. It was started on September 2nd, 2023 and it’s meant to inspire cultural expression through stylish apparel and Design. We do custom orders that are high-quality but cost-effective designs to represent who you are as a person. We are based in Kansas City Missouri but looking to expand in other major cities as well within the US. Currently, our whole website is up to 70% off because we are in the process of rebranding. I am proud of a lot of things concerning Atielah. For one, this was something I never thought I could do on my own physically. I always felt the need to have someone right on my hip but I realized eventually that God was that person. That’s also another thing I’m very happy about and proud of. I can always turn to God in hard times with Atielah and other aspects of my life.
