Hidden Gems: Meet Lacie Perry of Little Loves KC, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacie Perry

Hi Lacie , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been around kids my whole life and I come from a big family. I am one of five children and have a lot of cousins as well. Often times my mom would volunteer me to babysit for her friends for date night every now and then. One summer when I was ten years old, a family friend was desperate for childcare for her five-month-old and she asked if I’d be interested in some part-time work. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity to help and to get baby cuddles all summer! After that summer, I made business cards for myself and started giving them to people at my church. Business started booming from there! I nannied all through high-school and planned to do the same in college, but I knew I’d have a busy schedule as a nursing major. Conflicted with feelings of wanting a career and degree, but also loving my current job, college seemed extremely unfulfilling. I couldn’t understand why I needed to stop doing what I loved so much in order to pursue a degree I’m not guaranteed to use. After months of stress, contemplating dropping out, and changing my major twice, I had an eye-opening conversation with one of my nanny moms. She was expressing her concerns to me about having another baby, but felt conflicted about work, sleep, older kids, etc. Then she told me that I was the only person she’d trust with her newborn, but she didn’t want to put that pressure on me as I was still pursuing a degree at the time. That night I went home and immediately started looking up Doula trainings near me. Still not completely sold on it, I went to church that Sunday and met a sweet new friend who was new to my church, and she told me she was a Doula. It was in that moment that I knew, I needed to reach out to other local moms. After hearing her story and the stories of mothers throughout my community, I knew being a Doula was my calling.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For me, I think the biggest challenge was learning how to get out of my comfort zone in general, but especially with social media. Despite my generation growing up with social media, I am not particularly fond of it, nor am I very good at using it. I consider myself very shy with things like that, so it has definitely been a learning experience in that aspect. Building clientele was also some-what of a struggle as well. I learned very quickly that networking is so import for building a business. Something else I found challenging was realizing that not everyone is supportive and encouraging. I think that was the biggest surprise to me. I think a lot of it comes from lack of knowledge about birth and postpartum healing, which tells me I need to spread more information and encourage my network and community to do the same.
