Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Summers.
Hi Kristin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a self-care coach, intimacy guide, writer, speaker and app creator, you’d think by the description I just gave you that I’ve always been an ambitious person. The truth is – I never wanted to be an entrepreneur. Growing up in the country in Missouri, I imagined following the “Life Checklist” before me. Graduate high school. Check. Graduate college. Check. Marriage. Check. Kids, House, Car, Dog and the other D – Debt- that comes with it. Check Above All. So what happened? What cataclysmic event occurred that transformed me into this multi-passionate CEO? Mental illness. Shortly after my third child, my daughter was born, I was diagnosed with severe postpartum depression and anxiety from the birth control shot. Doctors said it could take up to two years for my body to regulate itself again. I questioned the very foundation of my identity and realized that it was shambles. I didn’t know who I was or what I wanted anymore. For the first year, I did was is considered mainstream self-care: face masks, gym and eating healthy. And I felt a little better. But on my daughter’s first birthday, I had an anxiety attack that woke me up. There had to be more to self-care. I decided then to dive deep into studying the mind, body and soul connection. It was from my discoveries that I knew there was more to the “Life Checklist.” What I found was a distinct difference between mainstream self-care and real self-care. First, the checklist is complete BS. Second, I create my own world, my reality. We all live in our own world. I am not here to change the world, but if I can help one person, I’ve changed their world. And that’s what matters. Through my own research, I created a self-care rewards app and developed a mindful self-care program called the 5-Pillar Self-Care Method. I now speak about my research and entrepreneurship on virtual stages across the globe and continue to expand my empathy market to awaken people to the truth about self-care and to empower them to shape their worlds into their desired reality. People can have it all … you just have to know what your all looks like and go for it. And I love every minute of it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Challenges are opportunities for growth. There has been plenty of growth in my life. From overcoming severe PPD/PPA, PTSD, generalized anxiety disorder, dysthymia to leaving an emotionally and financially abusive marriage to scaling my business during the divorce to be the success it is today. All of it has taught me so much about myself, which gives me perspective and empathy when I work with my clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Back to Self-Care is a self-care education and empowerment company focused on all minds. We use a variety of channels and platforms to educate and empower minds about mindful self-care so they can live the life they deserve. We offer self-guided online courses on compassion, connection, self-care and self-love, customized 1:1 coaching through our à la carte approach, a monthly subscription to the Limitless Love Club, essentially your mental gym buddy with community and in-person & Zoom meet-ups, and business pop-ups for employers who want to give their employees wellness tools to succeed professionally and personally. I am currently most proud that we were recognized as a Small Business Superstar by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. I am also excited that most of my 1:1 clients are males at the moment. The fact that men are starting to see their value and want to take care of themselves better and love themselves is exciting to see and be part of.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
They say those closest around you influence you the most. It’s true. I have many people that have come into my life and have done their part to help me along the way. I have a tribe of women that have been with me for many seasons of my life. They have seen me transform into the woman I am today and have loved me through all of it. My family has also been incredibly supportive. And my partner, he celebrates me when I’ve reached a goal (of any size), brushes my shoulders off when I feel down and holds my hand when I need a gentle reminder of the important work I’m doing to change the narrative around self-care and self-love. To say I’m grateful doesn’t seem like a strong enough word to describe my appreciation. But I am – I am incredibly grateful.
