Hi Kim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After years of working in Business Management and going through the ups and downs of the economy and layoffs, I took some time to research where there seemed to be more resiliency. I discovered pets were a huge thing and the care for them was important to their owners. I became a Practice Manager at a corporate Vet Hospital in Overland Park and learned so much about animal health and wellbeing. I later moved to a single practice Veterinary Clinic in Olathe as the Hospital Manager and learned Vet Tech skills as well. While this was not the highest paying job I had ever had, it was the most rewarding. Providing care to pets from the time they are puppies or kittens until the end of life, is the most rewarding experience. During my years at this practice, I also started my own Pet Sitting business. The relationships built with the pet parents and the pets is very fulfilling. After several years at the Vet Hospital, In 2018, I decided it was time to do my own thing. An opportunity arose on Facebook with a Self Wash for pets being sold in Gardner, KS. I knew immediately this is what I needed to do. The timing was perfect. Within a month, we were no longer a Self Wash business, but a full service grooming business. I had hired bathers and Groomers within the first 2 months of being open. I had no idea it would be so big. Within a year, we decided to open another location in my home town of Olathe. Olathe grew so quickly, we had to move to a location double the size at the end of our lease. We have now recently opened our third location in Leawood.
What makes us different? We provide one-on-one grooming services in a loving environment where the focus is on your pet during their visit and they are not kenneled for long periods of time. We use products without harsh chemicals and tailor our services to the pets need. My team communicates well with owners and we make sure their experience is positive. We work with all breeds and temperaments. I personally work with aggressive pups that need groomed to make them feel secure and safe. We do groom cats as well at all 3 locations.
As the owner of Pups-n-Suds, it is most important to me to provide services to pets and educate their owners on how to care for their coats and health at home. My team is important to me and I will only employee those who have the same passion for animals and their care as I do. We work as a team to provide the best services and care to every pet that comes through the door. We also will only do what is in the best interest of the pet and will not put them through anything that will cause them excessive stress.
We are here going strong after 7 years and we look forward to caring for pets for as long as we can. It provides such satisfaction at the end of the day knowing you were able to care for some of the sweetest and sometimes not the sweetest pets around. They all need love no matter what. We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. A few months after opening our 2nd location, Covid hit and we had to shut down for a brief period. After things opened back up, finding staff again was a bit hard as some were still afraid to be out and around others. I took on Grooming myself to keep up with the demand we were having at the time. Many pets had not been groomed in months because of Covid and were in horrible shape. Eventually, things turned around and we grew back more than before.
We’ve been impressed with Pups-N-Suds, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As the owner of Pups-n-Suds, I interact daily with clients and pets. I also work in the business providing Grooming services as well. I personally groom cats and also aggressive dogs. We specialize in providing one-on-one grooming to pets in a loving environment. We monitor pets for any changes in their skin, coat, behavior, etc and document this information and inform the owner. Groomers often find conditions that pet parents miss. As a former Vet Tech, I have immense knowledge of pet health and behavior and recommend what owners can do in collaboration with their Vet. I am proud to have staff that loves what they do and loves animals as much as I do. Our front desk staff is amazing at all 3 locations and always happy to assist clients in any way. We take pride in our work and post fun photos each day of all the pets, post grooming, to showcase each team members work.
Any big plans?
To grow and continue to provide exceptional services to clients and pets. Researching pet health and trends and utilizing that knowledge to help our clients care for their pets. Will we open more locations? Possibly, but our focus now is the locations we have and our continued growth within.
