Hidden Gems: Meet Kelly Umbach of Mindset Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Umbach.

Hi Kelly, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’ve been interested in health and fitness most of my life! I’ve tried many ways of eating and many ways of working out – just like most of you. After years of distance running and restricting calories, I ended up with a stress fracture in my femur. I was nearing 40 and knew I had to find a different approach to wellness. I started lifting weights – CrossFit and Olympic lifting – and doing more HIIT. I started eating to fuel my performance, not as a reward or punishment. My mindset started to shift around food and exercise. I began a regular yoga and meditation practice. My body composition started changing and I was finally realizing what optimal wellness and fitness felt like and I wanted to share this with others.

In 2010 I opened a CrossFit gym and began helping many people obtain the same results and freedom around food and movement. Over the past decade, I’ve done a deeper dive into Nutrition, Movement, and. Mindset with degrees from Precision Nutrition, the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, as well as becoming a 300 hr. Yoga Teacher and certified Meditation and Breathwork Coach. I am a health and nutrition coach and I help busy people just like you find their formula for WELLTH – a sustainable approach to health and wellness that meets you where you are and sets you up to look and feel you’re very best.

I work with Health and Nutrition clients 1:1 and in small groups, I give nutrition talks, teach yoga classes publicly and privately, and continue to coach group fitness.

Outside of that, I am married to a very supportive husband and together we have 5 children and 2 grandchildren! We love exploring Kansas City’s vibrant arts and food scene but I can never resist a trip to the beach or the mountains.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh no it has not. I have learned to appreciate each one of those struggles as a chance to learn and grow. There is a lot to learn when you face challenges – mental toughness and tenacity, and then acknowledgment that things work out as they are supposed to. Better than you can ever imagine.

As you know, we’re big fans of Mindset Wellness. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a health and nutrition coach – I use a holistic approach to find the balance your life needs. We look at nutrition, movement, and mindset, as well as stress, sleep, and recovery. It’s a unique and personal journey for everyone. It is a gift to help people discover this for themselves. I help a wide variety of people meet their goals – from youth sports participants to competitive CrossFit athletes, to people wanting to lose weight, or just feel better in their skin. It truly is individualized and everyone can benefit from having the support and accountability of a Health Coach in your corner.

I teach yoga – I teach a fantastic Yoga for Athletes class and a Mindful Restorative Class at 2020 Fitness in Prairie Village. I teach public and private classes to individuals, small groups, and corporate clients. I also facilitate guided meditation and breathwork classes.

I coach strength and conditioning at two area CrossFit gyms – 2020 Fitness and Fountain City Fitness.

My approach is mindful, encouraging, and holistic. I’d love to talk to you about how all of this can help you become the best version of yourself.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Listen to your body – rest, breathe, meditate, walk, journal. You may not be able to control what’s going on around you but you can always control your response. Eat well, move, slow down, and process. We were forced into this during the Covid Crisis, but it remains a very important way to approach life still.
