Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Grote.
Hi Kathryn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into audiology began long before I ever knew the word for it. In high school and early college, I started babysitting for a young boy who was deaf and communicated using sign language. To connect with him, I learned basic sign language, and through that experience, I witnessed something truly special—my sister, who was the same age as him, became his friend despite the communication barriers. Watching their bond form was incredibly moving. It showed me that communication goes far beyond words and that connection is a fundamental human need. His mom was the first person to suggest I consider audiology as a career path, and from that moment on, I never looked back.
I went on to practice in a medical setting, worked for two global leading manufacturers, and eventually purchased four different audiology practices as their owners prepared for retirement. Along the way, I recognized a significant need for exceptional, patient-centered hearing care in the Kansas City area—my hometown. This is my stomping ground. I was born and raised here, and I have a vested interest in seeing our community thrive, especially through strong local businesses. More importantly, I want people to hear well, stay connected, and fully participate in their lives with the people they love.
Untreated hearing loss often leads to social isolation, and research continues to show a strong connection between hearing loss and increased risks of dementia and other health concerns. I am a firm believer in taking care of our bodies and protecting our brain health. For me, audiology isn’t just a profession—it’s a calling. It’s about restoring connection, preserving independence, and helping people live healthier, fuller lives.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say mostly smooth, but not without a lot of hard work. Luckily, I very much enjoy working hard & conquering challenges. I was diagnosed with an auto immune condition about 7 years ago. Initially, I wasn’t sure how it would impact my professional journey. I learned as time went on, I have learned how to manage & modify my lifestyle to reach my health goals. I am blessed with stability in my health & the ability to own a business in a field I have spent my entire professional career. Owning a business is a lot of work and you never really get a break, but it is so incredible to reach goals and milestones, I never thought were possible.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about KC Hearing Center?
KC Hearing Center is a locally owned audiology practice focused on providing high-quality, personalized hearing care to people across the Kansas City area. We offer comprehensive hearing evaluations, advanced hearing technology, tinnitus support, and long-term hearing wellness care. What we do goes far beyond simply fitting hearing aids—we help people stay connected to their families, friends, and everyday moments that matter.
What sets us apart is how much we truly care about our patients. We take the time to listen, educate, and make sure people understand their options so they can make confident decisions about their hearing health. Our care is never rushed or one-size-fits-all. Every patient’s lifestyle, goals, and challenges are different, and we treat them that way.
We’re known for being approachable, honest, and deeply invested in long-term outcomes—not quick fixes. We believe hearing health is tied directly to overall health. Untreated hearing loss can lead to social withdrawal, cognitive decline, and other serious concerns, and we’re passionate about helping people protect not only their hearing, but their brain health, independence, and quality of life.
I’m especially proud that KC Hearing Center is rooted in the community where I was born and raised. This is my home, and I have a real personal investment in seeing our community thrive. We support local families, work with local businesses, and focus on care that feels personal—not corporate.
What I want people to know about our brand is that we are real people caring for real people. We’re not just here to sell devices—we’re here to build relationships, restore confidence, and help people feel more connected to the world around them.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
That when you truly put people first, everything else falls into place. I learned this when I was in a regional sales manager position for 2 global hearing aid manufacturing companies. I supported Audiologists and Hearing Instrument Specialists by training them on products, providing services for their patients, assisting in business development, among other things. I did not believe in high pressure sales, it isn’t my personality, but I did believe in taking care of people. That is what I did & I was often a leader among my sales team. I learned a lot from those roles that lead me to own and grow my own business. It is all about supporting others.
