Hidden Gems: Meet Justin Walden of Comfort Kings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Walden.

Justin Walden

Hi Justin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
The story of Comfort Kings starts with a young man in the early 80s trying to find a way to support his wife and small children. Through his superior networking skills, he met someone who introduced him to the HVAC and refrigeration industry. For years, this young man worked independently, supporting his family. He regularly would take one or all of his three sons along to teach them the craft so they would one day have a skill set. 40 years and seven kids later, Scott and his sons are still in the industry, caring for the Kansas City market. However, It was time to pass the torch (and the stress of owning a small business) to his sons, who decided to take the family business to the next level and formed Comfort Kings in 2020/2021. Comfort Kings has held to that family tradition, and our relationships were built in those 40 years of service to KC. We are a family-owned and operated small business with a strong emphasis on community and faith. Our commitment to our customers and KC pride sets us apart from the rest and continues to help us grow our business.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Like most small businesses, our organization doesn’t have the large financial backing of some of these national providers, so we’re constantly trying to figure out how to market with what we do have, what technology we can introduce to help us and our customers, and how/when we can steadily increase our labor force all while continuing to live by our core values.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Comfort Kings?
We are a family-owned heating and cooling provider that serves the Kansas City area. We have deep roots in the market and continue to push for honest service with fair pricing. We service residential and commercial customers by offering service and installation of furnaces, air conditioners, indoor air quality products, mini splits, commercial refrigeration and commercial kitchen equipment, packaged rooftop units, and so forth. We are a service company, not a sales company like most other providers, so we will only sell you something you need. Every technician is instructed to treat each home like their own and provide solutions based on need, not sales.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those just starting.
For those starting, be ready to work hard at all times of the day. There are many resources out there to help you get started, and many small-business owners are happy to provide guidance. Network with those people and build a good support team, along with some employees/partners who want to see your business succeed. Lastly, put quality of service and customer-focused solutions at the front of your vision for success, and you’ll never regret it.
