Hidden Gems: Meet Julie Pickering of JP Equestrian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Pickering.

Hi Julie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the St. Louis area, and have loved horses for as long as I remember. I got my start trail riding and riding western, but soon switched to English and riding hunter/jumpers. I decided being a riding instructor and horse trainer was the career path for me so after graduating from William Woods University with a degree in Equestrian science I moved to Kansas City for my first job in the industry. I opened up my business JP Equestrian in 2004 and the rest is history. I have enjoyed serving the Kansas City area for 24 years teaching future equestrians, introducing people to the sport, and helping others achieve their goals.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an entrepreneur is never a smooth road, and caring for animals is a labor of love, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. One of the biggest struggles is having the stamina to endure the long hours that this career requires of you.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
JP Equestrian is a full service stable offering care for clients Horses, training in the sport of Hunter/ Jumper, and coaching for competition.
My commitment to continued education and results at a high level of sport set me apart. I am most proud that in our stable the horse always comes first.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was studious, quiet and dedicated. My interests were mostly horses, but I also had a big interest in music and played the piano and clarinet.
