Hidden Gems: Meet JR Moody of Dynamic Ability Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to JR Moody.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Dr. JR Moody, founder of Dynamic Ability Physical Therapy in Overland Park. I’ve been practicing in outpatient orthopedics and sports medicine since 2012 and have always been passionate about helping people move better, feel stronger, and return to the activities they love—without being rushed through care.

When I first started Dynamic Ability Physical Therapy, I was still working full-time at a skilled nursing facility while building my mobile practice on evenings and weekends. I had always wanted a permanent space, but at the time it was difficult to afford and even harder to find something that fit my vision. So I started where I could—by going to people’s homes and providing one-on-one, high-quality care focused on helping them achieve lasting results.

Throughout my career, I’ve continuously improved my skills through an enormous amount of continuing education—not because I wanted to be the best physical therapist in town, but because I wanted to become the best version of myself. Helping people reach their goals and overcome pain is deeply rewarding, and I genuinely enjoy learning the latest in modern treatment approaches and neuro pain science.

Eventually, while I was looking for a space, one of my former patients—whom I had helped rehab from injury back to playing professional soccer—reached out. He had recently purchased a gym and was looking for a physical therapist to partner with in their personal training and sports performance business.

That former patient was Nathan Spruill, and because of the connection we built through his rehab process, the opportunity felt like a perfect fit. Nathan’s hard work, intelligence, and passion for strength training and nutrition made it an easy decision to team up. That partnership became the foundation for what is now Dynamic Ability Physical Therapy, located inside Olympus Athletic Performance & Fitness.

Today, I work with everyone from youth athletes to active adults well past 70. I’m passionate about empowering people to take ownership of their health and showing that physical therapy can be proactive, not just reactive.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been worth it. I’m steadily growing Dynamic Ability Physical Therapy with the goal of one day transitioning into it full-time. Balancing my time between my current job at a skilled nursing facility and building my own practice has been challenging, but it’s also rewarding. It’s taught me patience, persistence, and how to grow the right way—by focusing on great care first and letting the rest follow.

Each step has reminded me why I started—to help people move better and live healthier lives—and that keeps me motivated every day.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Dynamic Ability Physical Therapy?
Dynamic Ability Physical Therapy is built on the belief that every person deserves focused, one-on-one care designed around their individual needs and goals. I take a whole-body approach to treatment, working with everything from the neck, shoulders, and spine to hips, knees, ankles, TMJ, and headaches. My goal is to restore movement, reduce pain, and help people perform at their best—whether they’re recovering from injury, staying active, or pursuing peak performance.

If I was going to go out on my own, I knew I had to be really good at what I do and have enough tools in the toolbox to adapt to any patient in front of me—because not everyone responds the same way. I use a variety of advanced treatment methods including dry needling, cupping, blood flow restriction training (BFR), IASTM (instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization), compression mobility bands, and spinal manipulation. I also use objective strength testing with a handheld dynamometer to precisely measure force production rather than relying solely on manual testing.

My background as a former college baseball player shaped my understanding of performance, recovery, and what it takes to compete at a high level. I’ve completed training with the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) for golf performance, McKenzie spine therapy, and movement assessment systems such as FMS (Functional Movement Screen) and SFMA (Selective Functional Movement Assessment).

What sets Dynamic Ability PT apart is the ability to combine these diverse techniques into a customized, hour-long one-on-one session for each patient. My approach is both scientific and personal—using the right tool for the right person at the right time—to help every individual unlock their full ability and live without limitation.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is the kind of impact I leave behind. I want people to remember that JR Moody was a good man who truly cared about helping others, gave his best every day, and made a positive difference in people’s lives.

My goal isn’t just to build a successful business—it’s to build something that lasts. I want Dynamic Ability Physical Therapy to continue serving people with integrity and personal care long after I retire, without ever being taken over or diluted by a large hospital system. I’m proud to have built something rooted in relationships, quality, and trust, and I want that legacy to carry forward.

At the end of the day, I measure success by impact—helping people move better, live better, and know they were genuinely cared for. If I can leave that kind of mark, that’s what truly matters to me.
