Hi Jennifer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
What began as a vision to preserve a piece of Topeka history has grown into one of Northeast Kansas’ most celebrated wedding and event venues. Originally designed by Kansas State Architecture students in 1927 as a dairy barn, The Brownstone sat quietly on five acres of countryside, serving many purposes throughout its lifetime, from family homes to small businesses and even a bed and breakfast. In 2016, the Brown family saw the incredible potential hidden within its historic walls and embarked on an extensive renovation to transform the property into a place where life’s most meaningful moments could be celebrated. Since opening in 2017, The Brownstone has welcomed hundreds of weddings, corporate events, and community gatherings, becoming a trusted destination for unforgettable celebrations. Today, our team is proud to host more than 100 events annually, helping couples and clients create memories that will last a lifetime while continuing to honor the rich history and legacy of this remarkable space.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? Not always, but every challenge has helped shape who we are today.
The Brownstone hosted its first wedding season in 2017, and I was fortunate to join the team as Venue Manager in 2020. That year brought unprecedented challenges as the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the events industry in ways no one could have anticipated. Like many venues, we had to adapt quickly to changing regulations and gathering restrictions. Rather than focusing on what we couldn’t do, our team focused on how we could continue serving couples. We created intimate micro-wedding experiences, allowing couples to celebrate their marriage in meaningful ways while navigating uncertain times.
Since then, every season has brought new opportunities to learn, grow, and improve. While our processes, services, and offerings continue to evolve, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to exceptional customer service. We believe every couple, family, and client deserves an extraordinary experience, and our team takes great pride in creating celebrations that are seamless, memorable, and uniquely personal. Much of that culture stems from our owner, Abbey Brown, whose entrepreneurial spirit, vision, and genuine care for others continue to inspire our team. Her leadership has helped The Brownstone grow into one of Northeast Kansas’ most trusted and award-winning event venues, and we are honored to be part of so many unforgettable moments each year.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest piece of advice for anyone just starting in the wedding industry is to focus on building relationships. Attend networking events, connect with fellow vendors, and invest time in creating genuine friendships within the industry. Some of our greatest successes have come from collaborating with and supporting other local businesses. The wedding industry is at its best when vendors cheer one another on and work together to create exceptional experiences for clients.
It’s also important to stay focused on your own vision. Trends, social media, and what competitors are doing can be distracting, and it’s easy to get caught up in constantly comparing yourself to others. While it’s important to evolve and stay informed, don’t lose sight of why you started in the first place. Focus on the unique value and service you want to provide, remain true to your brand, and continue improving your craft. Authenticity, consistency, and a genuine passion for serving people will take you much further than chasing every trend that comes along.
