Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Grossman.
Hi Heidi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been a college mathematics professor for 15 years, but I have had a dream of owning a dress shop for several years. I have lived and worked in Atchison, Kansas for the last 9 years and have come to love the community. After several area retailers with formal dresses closed, I was inspired to follow my passion and start a local dress shop. I received a lot of advice and support from other ladies that have small businesses. And, I feel blessed to have the wisdom of other local retailers to help guide me as I started this adventure. I opened the shop in August (2025) and have received a wonderful reception from shoppers in the area. I sell new dresses and dresses on consignment, as well as jewelry and new shoes. While I am still teaching math at Benedictine College, this new venture is helping me explore another creative aspiration.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall, things have fallen into place beautifully to get the store off of the ground before homecoming season. I thank God for some divine appointments that allowed me to get some beautiful dresses in the shop for people to see. The hardest part of starting the business has been my struggle to be patient. I am excited to get people in the store to see the great inventory and the things I have to offer, but I realize it takes time to get the word out about any new opportunity. I am anxious to show the surrounding area that Atchison has a lot to offer; and this shop is another great attraction.

Heidi’s Dress Shop sells new and consigned dresses. We have dresses for homecoming, prom, mother-of-the-bride, and “less than formal” dresses. We also sell jewelry from two local artists. We sell new shoes and purses as well. We offer dry-cleaning services through East Hills Cleaners. In addition, we offer appointments for personal service that works with your schedule.
