J.Higgins, Ltd has been in business since 1983 when John Higgins created the company from the ground up here in Kansas City. From his notable record as a competing Scottish Bagpiper, he began the business as a reed maker, selling handcrafted reeds for bagpipers. From there, the business successfully grew into the clothing side of the art form with the making of kilts, jackets, and other highland wear accessories.

As one of the first American companies to deal in bespoke Scottish attire, the business became a pioneer in establishing the presence of the highland arts in the USA and a steady supplier for pipe bands, clan societies, colleges, and many different corporations with Scottish and Irish connections. Today, the company remains a part of the Kansas City fabric with its growth and expansion into the Police and Fire Department Honor Guard clothing business as well as a world-recognized producer of fine Scottish clothing and bagpiping supply in the USA.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Every business of every kind will face challenges throughout the course of its existence. The only consistent thing is change, and one of the biggest obstacles is adapting to change and keeping things fresh. There is always a constant balance between quality and growth, and maintaining both is a hard task.
