Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregg Hudson.
Hi Gregg, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Fountain City FC was founded in May 2018. I got involved with soccer when I was five years old and played through my childhood years into adulthood. I was fortunate to have an opportunity to be a part of a team that captured the first-ever conference championship my freshmen year of college. To me, soccer was a passion that allowed me to escape the reality of life growing up with a single parent. Growing up, I always knew my upbringing was different. It was only me, my brother Terry, and my mother. I didn’t have that father figure in home to have that male influence. But through soccer, I was able to meet people from different countries through soccer and established lifelong friendships. Soccer gave me confidence that I wanted to share with many children once I became older.
When my business partner Anthony Walker and I began Fountain City FC, we did it in hopes to provide an opportunity to kids whose families may not have the financial means to enroll their children into premier-level soccer. In the beginning, we had three teams that were made up from people in the community we knew. We made it a point to build the foundation of our club on the focus of the whole child not just the athlete. Today as we start our fourth soccer year, we have 17 teams, both boys and girls ranging from First grade to Eighth grade. By the grace of God, we have grown from a small club to a soccer family that provides kids with opportunities to develop into leaders within their communities as well. This summer, our club was able to put together an exclusive soccer camp that gave children chances to do things they may not have done otherwise. Some of the things kids were able to experience were horseback riding, feeding sheep, fishing, hiking trails, and most of all getting to know other kids from various pathways of life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say it has been smooth for the most part, but we have definitely learned a lot on the way. Things such as how to enroll within the state organization and getting access to turf fields other premier clubs were using. When you first start a business, no one gives you guidance on the behind the scenes works to sustain the business so just learning the process of those things at first was tough.
As you know, we’re big fans of Fountain City FC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is a youth soccer club in the KC metro area serving kids from grades first through eighth. Fountain City FC’s goal as a competitive youth soccer club is to provide a positive team environment with high-quality coaching, in which players can develop both individual and team skills. Players, parents, and coaches working together and supporting each other is the best way to provide that positive environment. With our club, your player’s success will be based on individual improvement. We hope to foster an environment in which players can continue to move up and compete at a high competitive level.
I believe the aspect that sets us apart is our off the field experiences we provide our families with. We operate as a family, holding value to each individual equally. Also, we have made gains in giving back to the community as well through donations to autism awareness and volunteering to support other local businesses to gain awareness within their brands.
I am most proud of the families I have had the opportunity to meet through the Fountain City FC brand. I have watched our organization grow from the new kid on the block to a well-established organization competing at high levels. We have developed an atmosphere that everyone takes pride being a part of, and for that I’m proud that I’ve had this blessing in my life. I want readers to know that Fountain City FC is a premier soccer club that all children all welcome, no matter your background. We are here to serve kids and families to not only grow their love of the game but to be a support system in their lives.
What were you like growing up?
I was a fairly shy kid growing up. One would probably put me as an introvert. I enjoyed doing things like hide and seek, playing all sports with friends, but my most exciting thing to do was walking in the creek. My neighborhood friends and I would be out for hours at a time just exploring.
As I got older, I would say middle school age is when I began being more social with people outside of my usual friend groups. I started taking interest in learning from others and about other people. In sixth grade, my best friend moved to America from Bolivia and began to teach me all about his home.
Soccer was always something I excelled in, but few know I truly was a music person. I participated in school choir and church. I received a spot on the school concert choir as a tenor/baritone. To this day, I thoroughly enjoy all genres of music. Anyone who knows me can witness to that fact.
