Today we’d like to introduce you to Emilie James.
Hi Emilie , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in KC, specifically the Northland area, then went on to go to Northwest Missouri State for one year. During that year I realized I wasn’t happy with what I was pursuing. I knew in my heart that my true passion was esthetics. I had always struggled with my skin through school and never felt like I had the support I needed. I still wasn’t enjoying my studies after semester two so I knew I was meant to do this. I started beauty school instead of going back for my sophomore year. It was a really scary choice, none of my peers were on the same path as me, so I was just trusting myself during the process. After school started I learned about waxing and really fell in love with the feeling I was able to give everyone, confidence! Plus I was able to use my skills of photography, and art during the process. Brow waxes are a true art form and I also know the importance of having a great waxer. Not only am I passionate about the work I do, I also love meeting new people and really getting to know them. I’ve been an Esthetician for almost 5 years now and I have seen clients get married, have kids, start school, and everything in between, I just love being able to be part of their life, no matter how big or small!
Sometimes I can’t believe I’ve been open for almost two years, and I’m so excited to see how Skin by Em grows!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. When I opened my business I had 4 clients that week, all family and friends. I had already risked everything leaving my corporate wax chain, I wasn’t about to fail, that first week showed me I have nowhere to go but up. I had the support of everyone around me to keep pushing. And I’m so glad I did.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Skin by Em ?
I am a solo Esthetician that specializes in Brazilian and Brow waxes. I have been waxing for almost 5 years and believe I provide the best service in KC. I am a speed waxer, but that doesn’t mean I’m not thorough. I talk through every step and make sure you feel comfortable with the plan. I also provide brow tints and laminations, along with any body/face wax! I use hard wax which is easy on the skin, and follow up with post wax soothing products.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To keep going! That’s the hardest part. Some days you wonder if it’s worth it, then you think back to the girl in beauty school and realize it is, it’s all worth it because we’re proving to her and that we can and DID do it!
