Hidden Gems: Meet Christian Moore of Take Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Moore.

Hi Christian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From a young age, I have always been passionate about helping people. Every job I took had something to do with helping people, child care, customer care, hospital food service, foster care and most recently supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I attended the University of Missouri Kansas City, UMKC, where I received my bachelor of arts degrees in Sociology and Psychology. I cheekily tell people I majored in people.

Everything has been related to understanding people and supporting people through this thing called life. As I continue to evolve I’ve come to realize not only am I passionate about helping people, I am just as passionate about helping people who help people. This could be Direct Support Professionals, Youth Care Workers, Case Managers, Support Coordinators, Teachers, Coaches, Scout leaders, etc.

The pandemic was a period of real change for me. I had my second child during the fall of 2020, the still scary part.

Professionally I was making the highest salary to date as the Assistant Director for the agency I was working at the time. Being pregnant during a global pandemic has a funny way of putting life into perspective. I loved the work I was doing, but the infrastructure I had to work within left me extremely burned out. The pace of the high-stress position I held had finally caught up to me so I made the decision to quit my job and stay home full-time to care for my children. In addition to that, I came to the conclusion if I were to keep helping people I was going to have to create it and operate the business on my own terms. I decided to start a training service teaching people First Aid & CPR courses. This venture allows me to continue supporting people, people who help people and remain flexible for my family.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not always been so smooth. And what the road would be when it is still being forged? While the territory is mostly familiar there are aspects to owning a small business I continue to learn along the way. I really have had to adjust to the pace of this new normal we are living in. One of the challenges of a new business is becoming rooted in the community.

One obstacle I’m sure many can empathize with. I love meeting and engaging with people. It takes time for people to learn what you are and what you do. First Aid & CPR instruction I think is often misunderstood. These are life-saving skills that a person may never have to use. You hope never to be in the situation, but the reality of the situation is we all have a heart that needs to be taken care of. We always think there is enough time until there isn’t enough time.

As you know, we’re big fans of Take Care – CPR & First Aid Instruction. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My training is affiliated with the American Red Cross. People can receive certification in First Aid, CPR, AED, Bloodborne pathogens, basic life support, babysitter training to name a few.

Each class gets a personalized approach to learning. My experience in working with all the different things a person can go through has really afforded me the opportunity to cater to the person. This information is so vital and life-changing, it is very important to me that you feel confident and empowered as a person.

The majority of cardiac events happen outside of the hospital setting. When we need to clean our mouth we know to brush our teeth, when we get hungry we know it’s time to eat, when we’re tired we know we can take a nap. Yet when it comes to matters of the heart or respiratory system most people have limited knowledge of what to do next. This training is not only intended to potentially save a life but it is also intended to empower a person to take those vital next steps. Learning CPR has this stigma of being an elective activity or a requirement for employment. My mission is to remind people this is a care we all need. A cardiac event doesn’t care about your race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. We all have a heart that needs to be tended to. We always think there is enough time until there is no more time.

I am most proud of the opportunity I still have to support people. Most recently I assisted a Girl Scout troop with earning their First Aid Badge. It was a thrill to empower that group of eight-year-old girls. I used to be a Girl Scout myself this was a pretty full circle moment to return to the roots of where I first began to learn what it means to be a help to people.

What I hope people take away is that this business (and I) really care. We are all in this (a thing called life) together and with some compassion and understanding, we can all accomplish our goals. The message is in the name, we all need to take care, of ourselves and each other.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I have lived in KC my whole life. I feel my career has afforded me the opportunity to work with every corner of the KC metro area. What I’ve found is there is something for everyone. It is a city rich with history. It is a city full of nuance. I love its musical and artistic roots.

KC sometimes gets a bad rep, or sometimes doesn’t get the notoriety that other major cities get. I think is finally on the mend with the success of our sporting teams, and with some of the major events coming to KC. Definitely happy to see the growth.
