Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Jordan.
Hi Caitlin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I come from a family of helpers and caregivers, so I always knew that I wanted to have a meaningful career where I was able to have a direct impact on the lives and well-being of others. I’ve always had a really profound and existential interest in people- why we do what we do and how our experiences shape our thoughts, actions, beliefs, and emotions. So in college, I studied both Psychology and World Religions to deepen my understanding of what it means to be human. I decided that clinical counseling felt like the perfect intersection of my passions and curiosities, and the needs of others. I went on to get my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and have become a life-long student of psychology and all of the incredible skills and tools that are available to me to serve my clients. Being able to provide mental health counseling in my own practice has allowed me the autonomy to decide when and how I best serve my clients, continue education and training opportunities, and maintain a healthy work/life balance. I really love what I do!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think that, because I am a cis-gendered, white, middle-class woman, I have been allowed a lot of privileges that have made my road smoother than it is for others. I have been fortunate enough to have the family support, financial stability, and other opportunities that have allowed me to get to where I am today, and I think I’ve always been aware of and thankful for those privileges because they motivate me to use the skills, resources, and knowledge to make a difference. They say “with great power comes great responsibility,” and I would agree. Of course there have been bumps along the road and learning how to operate my own business has definitely had had its ups and downs, but I’ve grown a lot through the process.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Compose Counseling?
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and the owner of Compose Counseling, a mental health counseling practice based in Liberty. I offer individual mental health counseling for teens and adults dealing with a range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, religious trauma, self-esteem, and relationship difficulties. I specialize in and am passionate about working with members of the LGBTQIA+ community, whether that part of their identity is a part of why they are seeking therapy or if they just want someone who is informed and affirming. I have extensive experience working with folks who identify as transgender or gender non-conforming and am honored to be a resource for the transgender community. I think my approach to therapy is unique in that I enjoy taking an existential approach, often using Psychodynamic practices to work on a deeper level. I love helping clients explore not only how they feel, but why they feel that way, and how they integrate it all to move through life with more ease. I meet my clients where they’re at in the moment, so sessions look different for everyone, but usually include a mix of integrating coping skills and conversations to deepen self-awareness and understanding. I’m also able to meet virtually with folks anywhere in Missouri!
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I don’t know if I could choose a favorite, but a lot of my most valuable memories are of spending time with my family, especially with my siblings. A lot of my memories of childhood include play with my siblings and reading- I’ve always loved reading! Book fairs were heaven on earth!
