Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Roberts.
Hi Brian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I saw a need/opportunity to elevate Black brands. With Covid restrictions on high, traditional pop-up models don’t work. It forced my creativity. I came across the trailer model that allowed me to be present around the flow of shoppers in the spaces I saw our target market.
Made Mobb gave me my first shot. Being very optimistic, I reached out to Made In KC for an opportunity to expand, even before my first pop-up. I worked with Porter House for confidence/guidance and drown myself with podcasts and articles.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not smooth. Inventory management, finding right items, acquiring and trying to retain customers, up and down Covid panic… Not to mention still working a 40+ hr job.
We’ve been impressed with The Black Pantry, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Readers, The Black Pantry sells items from Black businesses that doesn’t make it solely for Black people. 80% of what you will find in our retail locations you will not find anywhere else in Kansas City. The 20% you may get is local and/or some larger chain grocers may carry. Our goal is to elevate Black brands, creatives and businesses. Giving opportunities to provide a larger presence within the retail space.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Best, the energy the City puts around things they love. Opportunities for growth are unmatched for those who have creative and unique skills and ideas. Worst, lack of diversity. Segregation is built into the foundation of the City. The incremental change is too slow, steps are too short. I’ve seen dramatic change in other spaces. It doesn’t take time, it takes effort.
