Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Cameron.
Hi Andrew, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I grew up eating and loving donuts. Despite having never cooked a donut in my life, after college I decided to open a donut shop in my hometown of Leavenworth, KS. It did extremely well and I ended up opening 8 donut shops across Kansas City. My most recent shop, Donutology, is located in the heart of the city between Westport and the plaza. At Donutology, we offer an array of classic favorites to custom-made to order miniature donuts with fun and fancy toppings.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Business is hardly ever easy and that’s why it is so exciting and worthwhile in my opinion. From financing to staffing, there have been numerous challenges throughout the 10 years I’ve been doing this. I remember cooking donuts on Christmas night and being the only one to show up. Luckily my best friend Tanner came to the rescue to help. I found myself wondering what I had gotten myself into. There have been so many rewarding times, too. Like the time we fundraised through donuts to buy out an entire movie theater for underprivileged families dealing with autoimmune diseases to watch the Lion King movie in safety and peace.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Donutology?
Donutology is located in the Westport district of Kansas City, Missouri, in the former Tower Cleaners Art-Deco inspired building built in 1944. Billed as a “modern donut laboratory” where customers are encouraged to discover their unique “donut gene” by experimenting with toppings served from glass beakers, Donutology specializes in from-scratch mini cake donuts and seasonal donuts and also features full-size classics like glazed, twists, apple fritters and baked cinnamon rolls, among others. We feature a wide array of icings, toppings, and drizzles to choose from for a signature creation that is then made-to-order. Donutology has a commitment to using locally sourced ingredients with vendors like Kansas Heartland Milled Flour, Shatto Milk Company products, and Belfonte Ice Cream; and a custom blend from The Roasterie for coffee drinks. We offer custom orders, including birthday, proposal, and team-building donut letters, wedding and other celebration donuts, and corporate, church, and school catering. Donutology is open seven days a week. For more information, visit http://www.donutology.
