Hidden Gems: Meet Amy Crowe of Lifeway Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Crowe.

Amy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I first got into practice, we had three children under age five. My mom had moved to KC to help us balance everything, but it was still WAY too overwhelming. I closed that first office after about a year. We went on to have two more babies, and I was a stay-at-home mom for about a decade. I kept my skills from completely tanking by treating our friends and family, and I took continuing education every year and maintained my license all that time.

When our youngest was getting close to kindergarten age, I started thinking about how I could get back into practice, and it was pretty daunting! I felt my skills were rusty. I wondered how much clinical knowledge I’d lost. I’d never had a good handle on the business side of the practice, so that was intimidating, too. One day, I was chatting with another female doctor, and she told me about an organization called, Women Chiropractors that had a program specifically designed for women in my situation.

When I was accepted into the Re-Entry Program, I was beyond ecstatic! We met almost every week via Zoom for six months, and it was exactly what I needed. As the program was winding down, I started looking at my options. Nothing was working out, and I was getting super discouraged. Then one of the mentors in my group suggested I open a house call practice, rather than a traditional office. After a few weeks of pushback, I’d finally exhausted all my arguments against house calls (ahem, fears about it), and now I LOVE practicing this way.

Sometimes when I talk through my story, I get a little teary-eyed, because I’m so grateful for the women who invested their time and energy in me. I’m still part of that organization, and I still reach out to friends I made in those months when I have struggles.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say my journey’s been smooth-ish. The biggest hurdle was just STARTING; it was incredibly scary to take steps back into the professional world again. I’ve learned ways to honor my introverted heart while managing a lot of going out and doing and peopling. Seeing my patients’ lives improve is definitely worth it! Learning and growing is almost never a smooth road, but I’m so grateful to be where I am today.

I’ve grown in ways I never expected over the past two and a half years. I am more capable than I ever realized, and I have much more grace for myself.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The most unique feature of my practice is that I’m mobile: I put my table and tools into my car, drive to wherever you are, and treat you right in your home or office. Kids and pets? No problem, so long as neither of them bites or makes messes on my table! Have a deadline looming? I’ll be in and out in a flash. Need a slower-paced appointment, because your littles are extra needy today? I’ve been there, and I’ve got you, sister.

I love to care for moms and women business owners because I understand the unique needs they have. A small percentage of people I see are men, mostly spouses or friends of my female patients. Right now I’m taking new clients, age 10 and up, and I’m currently studying to be certified as a sports chiropractor. My kids run track and cross country, and I want to help these student-athletes stay healthy and uninjured and perform at their best.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Nobody follows a trail of luck to succeed. Sometimes smart, educated choices lead to a loss, and sometimes foolish choices end in a surprisingly positive outcome. I’ve made lots of stupid decisions in life and in practice! I’m thankful that I’ve learned to see setbacks as temporary and as learning opportunities, rather than criticisms of me as a person and predictors of my future.
