Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Walla.
Hi Amber, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I began as a doula and childbirth educator (Bradley method) 22 years ago. I loved supporting parents through childbirth but also became frustrated with the hospital system. After the home birth of my 4th baby in 2002, I knew I’d been called to be a midwife and work in the community setting. At first, I thought I’d go the nurse-midwife route but was advised by many that direct-entry midwifery school and becoming a certified professional midwife would be the best path for out of hospital births.
I was blessed to train with a few different homebirth midwives and then finish clinicals at a freestanding birth center. I opened Sacred Song Homebirth in 2009 and have attended around 1500 births. I never dreamed I’d have a large practice and be training other midwives but I’m loving the way things have turned out.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not a smooth road. Getting through midwifery school while attending births and teaching childbirth classes while also homeschooling my own four children, felt impossible at times. It took about 7 years and I’d hoped that once I had my own practice things would be easier. Some things were easier. But others were much harder. Being on call 24/7, for years at a time can definitely wear on a family, marriage and health.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a team of midwives and student midwives offering holistic prenatal, birth and postpartum care in the community setting. (community birth is defined as out of hospital birth) We practice informed consent and individualized care which are cornerstones of midwifery. We love to get to know the entire family and work hard to make their birth dreams come true. We are proud to be trained in trauma informed care and believe that birth is a spiritual, safe and sacred event.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Kansas City. It’s where I grew up, raised my family and where my heart will always be. It’s so fun serving the metro and occasionally some of the rural outskirts. We drive all over meeting families in their homes. My husband and kids roll their eyes at me all the time when I say: “I’ve caught a baby in that house or not far from that building.”
