Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyson Pope.
Hi Alyson, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Wyoming but made my way to Columbia, Missouri for high school. In college, I studied printing at University of Central Missouri and worked for a small print company called Inks and Images. After college, I got the amazing opportunity to work for Hallmark Cards in Lawrence, KS and at corporate for a total of 15 years. During that time, I held six different positions and really enjoyed working for a great company like Hallmark. While working at Hallmark I started a small business called Victrix with four friends. The goal of Victrix was to run a local Kansas City roller derby league called Fountain City Roller Derby. I ran the marketing and merchandise department as well as training and recruitment for the league. Victrix was my first taste of being a business owner and while it’s hard work, it created a club that allowed for me and many others to play a sport that we loved while building lifelong friendships. Victrix lasted about seven years until it was time for me to move on to my next adventure. In 2020 while we battled COVID, I decided to open my own insurance brokerage providing property and casualty policies. It was scary to make this transition, but I was ready to build something that would allow for flexibility but still give me the opportunity to thrive. Today I’m proud to own and operate Goosehead Insurance – Alyson Pope Agency and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If life didn’t have obstacles and challenges, I think I would be bored. But life really tested me in 2013 when I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Trying to work full time at Hallmark while running the roller derby league came to a screeching halt when I got the call indicating I had a fight ahead of me. My friends, coworkers, business partners and teammates all came to my rescue and covered my duties at work for both Hallmark and Victrix while I began treatments. After 16 rounds of chemo and six surgeries, I’m happy to report I’m almost eight years cancer-free. It was a crazy obstacle that I overcame and I’m stronger for it!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As an insurance agent, I take a lot of pride in helping others protect their largest investments (homes, automobiles, bikes, boats, etc.) and make sure they feel safe and protected against any and all perils. I aim to make sure my clients have the right amount of coverage to protect their assets with a premium that will fit their budget. I know insurance isn’t sexy and people don’t like to spend more time on it than they have to on it, so my goal is to be efficient and educate my clients on what they need to know to have the best policy.
