Exploring Life & Business with Taylor Asay of Esthetician

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Asay.

Hi Taylor, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started esthetics school in 2018, almost right out of high school. I thought it was just something fun to do until I figured out pretty quickly that this was my lifelong career. I fell in love with esthetics the day I started. I was so eager and ready to learn everything I could!

When I got licensed, I was working in a very small town, and the place I was working at was extremely toxic. I felt so defeated every day. I began to second guess if this was the right job and industry for me. I knew I loved it, and I knew I was good, but having someone make you feel as if you’re not every day was very difficult.

I remember crying one evening, just not knowing what to do, so I called my skincare line rep at that time. I was so upset and just asking her what I should do, and without hesitation, she mentioned a day spa I should apply to. I trusted her so much as a mentor that once I got off the phone, I gave my notice and immediately applied to this day spa. I got hired right away, and I had been working there for about a month and then COVID happened.

I was like, “Okay, they are probably going to make cuts, and I’m the newest, so I’m just waiting for that phone call telling me I’m no longer an employee there.” But when I got that phone call, they actually told me they were ready to have me back and were ready to open back up. I felt such relief.

I was prepared for this to be a difficult time. Everyone was so scared, and COVID was such a big deal at the time, but COVID was something that actually helped skyrocket my career. I was able to build most of my clientele within six months of being at this day spa. I hustled and worked as hard as I could to gain my clients and their trust. I worked so many ends of the business and spa sides to learn as much as I could.

I was there for three years before I was ready to go big and open my own studio! I’m the proud owner of SILK Skin Studio! I’ve been in business almost 5 years and still going strong! I am also now a licensed Esthetics Instructor in Kansas. I currently run my esthetics business and teach aspiring students how to be great estheticians and possibly run their own successful business one day!

I think everything I’ve been through and every path I’ve taken has led me to exactly where I’m supposed to be today. So, even though my start was not the greatest, I’m grateful for every opportunity because I wouldn’t be right here today without it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it’s not been a smooth road. I think it’s easy to question if you’re making the right decisions. When I was just starting out, I had someone in my ear making me feel like I wasn’t good at my job and that I would never become something. I think, as a very young female, that’s hard to go through every day!

But I knew I was good at what I do, and I knew I had clients for a reason. I chose to find better for myself, and that’s exactly what I did. I’ve worked at an amazing day spa that helped reinstall that confidence within myself.

Even as an instructor, I constantly question if I’m doing the best thing for my students and their education, but I always have to remind myself that I’m here for a reason, and I have these skills for a reason. Everything hard is a lesson and it’s there to teach us something. So whatever we make of that lesson or allow it to teach us is creating the direct path we’re meant to be on.

We’ve been impressed with Esthetician, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a Licensed Esthetician I work on all skin types from teens, aging, acne, pigmentation. I specialize in full body waxing including Brazilians. My most popular services are Dermaplane and Brazilians. I’ve gained the title of “waxing queen” from everyone but I’m very well knowledgeable in my skincare and facials as well. All of my treatments a custom to my clients. I always say no facial will ever look the same as the last or from the last person on my table. Whatever specific concerns you have coming in is my top priority that treatment. I make sure we have consistent treatment plans. We always focus and target those frequent concerns but that we also focus on relaxation.

I’m a relaxation Esthetician. I think stress can cause so many issues within, that if we can calm the nervous system and relax for even just an hour we can correct so much within our skin just right there.

I am Circadia Skincare Certified. I’m also a part time Instructor at Premier Academy of Cosmetology and Esthetics also known as PACE.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
So, I’m very outgoing! I’m loud, fun, and always excited about everything, but I am someone who struggles with social anxiety. That has been a huge part of my life. I couldn’t stand in front of five people and speak. I would freeze and just not get a single word out. My whole body would shake and this panic would set in.

But throughout my life and career, I’ve learned to really push past that fear and anxiety, and I choose not to let it hold me back. I’ve learned to speak to people and clients, and I’ve done shows where I’ve spoken in front of big crowds. Most people are shocked when I tell them I have social anxiety and speaking to a crowd is one of my biggest fears!

I encourage everyone not to let fear hold them back, but instead, to embrace it! If I let my fears or anxiety hold me back I wouldn’t be the young entrepreneur that I am! Push through, take the risk, and you’ll feel so accomplished and grateful within yourself!
