Exploring Life & Business with Steve Heim of Heim Brother’s Hauling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Heim.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2008, my two brothers and I were looking for a truck to haul grain with on our small farming operation. When we came across a dump truck that our local county had traded in. We bought it and first just used it to haul grain with then started doing small rock hauling on the side of our full-time jobs. In 2018, I transitioned out of my full-time job to focus entirely on leading and operating Heim Brothers Hauling. It took a lot of hard work and sacrifice to make this transition. For me, I was starting off working more hours for less money than I was used to making. When raising six kids, it was a risky and hard decision to make, but I had the support of my family. My two brothers, Mark and Kevin, who I was in business with, greatly contributed to the success and growth of the business. We started out with just one truck and me as the only driver, and now we’ve grown to six trucks and four awesome employees. I was farming with my brothers while also hauling full-time for the business, and it became clear that most of my time and focus needed to be on growing the hauling side. It has always been a dream of mine to own my own business, so in 2025 my brothers and I decided to split the two businesses. Mark and Kevin would focus on the farming and I would take over Heim Brothers Hauling.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first started out, one of the biggest challenges was adjusting to hauling all day and then coming home to clean and repair minor breakdowns. On some days, I had to handle all of that plus complete billing in the office.
Another major challenge has been dispatching the trucks. Work can be very sporadic, slow at times and then extremely busy, making it difficult to plan and stay ahead. It also means having to make decisions about saying no to customers when we’re already booked up. I hate saying no, I love saying yes.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Heim Brother’s Hauling ?
Our company specializes in the hauling and transport of rock, dirt, asphalt, sand, and demolition materials, providing reliable and efficient service for construction, excavation, and site-development projects.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
“My favorite part of owning this company is the opportunity to meet and work with so many great people every day. My great employees, customers, contractors, and vendors who give me excellent service. Without all these great people, my company would not be as successful, and I am truly grateful for the relationships with each of them. Owing a small business requires a lot of time, hard work, dedication, but the fulfillment it gives you is well worth it.” -Steve Heim
