Exploring Life & Business with Randy Winchester of Dancing Cow Farms

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Winchester.

Hi Randy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We purchased the 70-acre farm in 2010 and in 2011 brought 7 Highland cows onto the farm. 1 bull and 6 cows. I grew up in small town Kansas, where our family owned a grain elevator, a feedlot, and farmed a few hundred acres. When I left for college, I swore I’d never go back to that. Well, 50 years later, here I am, playing on a farm. We sell cows to individuals wishing to purchase Highland cows. We also sell whole cow grassfed and grass-finished ground beef, no atibiotics or chemicals used in raising the cows. In 2018 we started receiving requests from people to come see the cows. This has expanded to a point, that in 2025 so far, we’ve had over 170 different groups come visit the farm to see and feed the cows. We don’t charge for tours but do accept free will donations to help cover expenses, such as cow treats and diesel. We currently have 16 cows on the farm.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a very smooth road, other than having to fix fencing that was in disrepair when we purchased the farm. The cows were good enough to let us know where it needed fixing.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Dancing Cow Farms was established in 2010. We specialize in raising Highland cows, but during the course of operations have also raised donkeys, goats, Jacobs 4-horn sheep, turkeys, geese, ducks, and chickens. We are most proud of the quality of beef we sell. It is grass fed and grass-finished, no antibiotics, chemicals or other additives. We use the whole cow to make ground beef. Providing tours for visitors is what keeps us most busy, we run 2 to 10 tours a week, by appointment, and only accept donations. Our cows live a great life here on the farm. They are kept on grass year round and never put in a feedlot or dry lot situation.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For those just starting out, be patient. This is not a computer simulation where you can click on something and just make it happen. You have to plan with a mindset of this may take years to complete and be satisfied with small gains and accomplishments.
