Exploring Life & Business with Nichole Bockover of Purple Lotus KC Wellness Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nichole Bockover.

Hi Nichole, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into the world of wellness and esthetics has been both personal and transformative. I’ve always had a passion for self-care and the beauty industry. My journey began when I earned a degree in Corporate Recreation and Wellness with a minor in Health Education, as my first passion was physical health and wellbeing. I would later go on to became a licensed massage therapist in 2003. As a lover of all things beauty and to fuel my creative side, I later became a certified professional makeup artist, working in the freelance world of makeup artistry and cosmetic retail. These early experiences built the foundation for the business I run today.

But it wasn’t until 2020—after losing my mother to ovarian cancer—that I truly discovered my purpose. During her treatment, I witnessed the toll chemotherapy and radiation can take on the skin and spirit. Wanting to help, I began researching safe skincare solutions for oncology patients and found there was a specialized path for estheticians to become oncology-trained. That discovery lit a fire in me. At the time I was working full time in law enforcement and was ready for a much needed change, so I enrolled in esthetics school. I would go on to earn my esthetics license, became an esthetics educator, and earned my CIDESCO diploma, the highest international certification in skincare.

Out of that journey, Purple Lotus KC Wellness Spa was born. The name was inspired by the purple lotus flower—a symbol of rebirth and resilience—which deeply resonated with me. I wanted to create a space that wasn’t just a spa, but a sanctuary—a place where people feel safe, supported, and truly seen.

At Purple Lotus KC, we specialize in results-driven skincare, wellness-focused massage therapy, and oncology-safe treatments. We also offer lash and brow enhancements, Reiki, body and face waxing and air brushed spray tanning —all under one roof—making us a one-stop destination for self-care. Clients can book multiple services in one visit, allowing them to care for both their skin and soul without spreading appointments over weeks.

Today, I feel honored to work with a wide range of clients—especially those with health-compromised skin—and to create a space where healing and beauty go hand in hand. My commitment to ongoing education, client-centered care, and empathy is the heart of everything we do at Purple Lotus KC. It’s not just about glowing skin—it’s about helping people feel whole again.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely there have been struggles—like any new venture, starting a business comes with its fair share of challenges. I launched Purple Lotus KC Wellness Spa at age 46, leaving a career that offered benefits, retirement, and steady pay. I was also fresh out of esthetics school, and against the common advice to work for someone else first. But I’ve always been a determined and resilient person. Once I feel strongly about something, I follow through with conviction.

I had a clear vision from the start—how I wanted my practice to feel, the product lines I trusted, and the kinds of services I wanted to offer, especially those focused on holistic care and oncology-safe treatments. That vision didn’t align with what I was seeing in other local businesses, at least not 100%, so I made the decision to build it myself, from the ground up.

In the beginning, I started with only friends and family as my clientele. There were no shortcuts—just faith in myself, my skill set, and the belief that if I created a space centered on compassion, professionalism, and results, the right people would find their way to me. And they have! I absolutely love my clients and am always excited to meet new clients.

It hasn’t been an easy journey —but it has been deeply rewarding and one I wouldn’t change. I’ve learned so much, not just about running a business, but about trusting the process, adapting, and continuing to grow both personally and professionally. There’s always more to learn and more to build—but I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Purple Lotus KC Wellness Spa is a private, one-stop destination for skincare, massage, lash and brow enhancements, waxing, and Reiki —but at its core, it’s much more than a spa. It’s a place where results-driven treatments meet deep compassion, where every client is treated like family, and where self-care is both accessible and sacred. It has always been important to me to be able to offer services that everyone can have access to and walk out feeling like they were heard and truly cared for.

What truly sets us apart is our specialized oncology skincare services. This is a space where individuals going through or recovering from cancer treatments can feel safe, nurtured, and supported. My passion for oncology esthetics began, like I mentioned before, with my mother’s cancer journey, and it’s become the heart of my work and how I can best honor her. I’m proud to offer facials, scalp and body treatments, and Reiki services that are not only gentle and non-toxic, but also emotionally restorative during a time when people often feel most vulnerable as well as stressed and scared. Purple Lotus KC is a place where they can let all that go if even just for a little bit.

At the end of this month, I’ll be attending an advanced oncology training retreat in Tennessee to deepen my education so I can better serve my clients. My goal is to expand these offerings by partnering with local oncology clinics to ensure that more people in our community have access to this level of intentional, healing care.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that everything we do is rooted in empathy, professionalism, and personalization. Every treatment is customized, every client is treated as an individual, and every detail—from our product choices to the ambiance of the spa—is designed to promote wellness, comfort, and results.

Whether someone is managing a chronic skin condition, preparing for a special event, or simply needs time to breathe and feel human again, Purple Lotus KC is here to hold that space with expertise and heart. That’s the soul of our brand—and the reason I do what I do every day

What were you like growing up?
Oh goodness—honestly, I was a lot like I am today. I was always busy, not able to sit still or in one place for too long, curious, and eager to learn. I had an outgoing personality and a love for being active. I started dancing at the age of four and stayed involved in various sports, but dance was always my first love. I was also a creative spirit from a young age—constantly drawing, painting, singing, taking photos—anything that let me express myself.

What’s remained consistent throughout my life is a deep desire to connect with others and help them feel seen, valued, and cared for. I truly believe that your true passion, whether it’s known immediately or not, is something you’re born with. It’s not something you develop over time—it lives in you, waiting to be honored. Every path I’ve taken, every career move I’ve made, has led me closer to that calling. And now, in the work I do, I can see how it all fits together. It’s a beautiful thing when you finally follow your heart and land right where you’re meant to be.
