Today we’d like to introduce you to Mirella Martinez.
Hi Mirella, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story really started with my daughter. She has always been my biggest inspiration, and she’s actually the reason behind the name **Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations**.
During COVID, I started making hair bows and faux leather mini purses. At the time, I honestly didn’t know how far it would go. I was simply doing something I enjoyed, creating things with my hands and being inspired by my daughter. Little by little, people started supporting what I was making, and that gave me the motivation to keep going.
Over the years, my business started growing right along with me. I began trying new things, learning new skills, and allowing myself to create without feeling like I had to stay in just one category. I expanded into jewelry, clothing, home décor, 3D-printed creations, baking, and other handmade and customized items.
Eventually, I also opened up a side of myself that I had kept much more private—my spiritual side. I started offering spiritual readings and cleansings, something I had previously only done for people who were very close to me. It took me some time to feel comfortable sharing that part of myself publicly because it was something very personal to me.
Once I did, I realized how meaningful those connections could be. For me, it isn’t just about giving someone a reading. I enjoy being able to connect with people, listen to them, and hopefully give them a little clarity, reflection, or encouragement when they need it.
Being a small-business owner while also being a wife and mom definitely isn’t always easy. A lot of what people see finished at an event or online was probably created late at night after my kids went to sleep! There have been plenty of long nights, slow events, mistakes, changes of direction, and moments where I’ve had to figure things out as I went.
But that’s also what makes me proud of how far I’ve come.
Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations started with hair bows, little faux leather purses, a daughter who inspired me, and an idea during one of the most uncertain times in our lives. Today, it has become a place where all the different sides of my creativity can exist together.
I’m still learning. I’m still growing. And I’m definitely still dreaming bigger.
The most important thing for me is that I haven’t forgotten why I started. My daughter and my family are still at the heart of everything I do. I also hope that through this journey, I’m showing my children that it’s okay to follow what you love, try something new, make mistakes, start again, and turn something you’re passionate about into something of your own.
And I feel like my story is still just getting started.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I think that’s also what has made the journey so meaningful.
One of my biggest struggles has been learning how to balance being a mom, wife, and business owner. My family will always come first, so sometimes that means putting my business to the side until my kids are taken care of. A lot of people see the finished products or my booth at an event, but they don’t see the late nights behind it. There have been many nights when I’ve stayed up until 2 or 3 in the morning creating, preparing orders, or getting ready for an event because that was the only quiet time I had to work.
Another challenge has been finding where I belong as a creator. I love doing so many different things, and sometimes there can be pressure to choose just one thing or stay in one lane. I’ve had to learn that my creativity doesn’t have to fit into a box. Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations has grown and changed because I have grown and changed too.
There have also been financial challenges and events where I invested a lot of time, money, and energy and didn’t make the sales I hoped for. As a small business, every event is a risk. You can spend weeks preparing and creating inventory without knowing how the day will turn out. Those moments can be discouraging, but they have taught me to pay attention, adjust, and keep moving forward.
I’ve also learned some difficult lessons about support and relationships. Not everyone you expect to support you will, and sometimes support comes from complete strangers instead. I’ve had to learn not to compare my journey to someone else’s or allow other people’s opinions to make me question what I’m capable of creating. There is room for all of us to succeed.
Opening up about my spiritual side was another personal challenge. For a long time, spiritual readings and cleansings were something I only shared with people close to me. Offering them publicly meant allowing people to see a side of me that I had kept private, and that required me to step outside of my comfort zone.
Through all of it, I’ve learned that running a business isn’t only about making sales. It’s about resilience, learning from the days that don’t go as planned, celebrating the small wins, and continuing even when you’re unsure of what comes next.
The road hasn’t been smooth, and I’m still figuring things out as I go. But when I look back at where I started—with hair bows and faux leather mini purses during COVID—and look at everything Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations has become, I’m proud that I kept going. Every struggle has taught me something, and every lesson has helped shape the business owner and creator I am today.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations LLC is a small business built around creativity, individuality, and connection. One of the biggest things I want people to know about my business is that I don’t believe creativity has to fit into one box.
I originally started with handmade hair bows and faux leather mini purses during COVID, but the business has continued to evolve as I’ve learned new skills and discovered new things I enjoy creating. Today, I offer a variety of handmade and customized items, including jewelry, accessories, clothing, home décor, 3D-printed creations, seasonal items, baked treats, and more. I love being able to walk into an event with something for different ages, personalities, and interests.
Another important part of my business is my spiritual services. I offer spiritual readings and cleansings, which are especially meaningful to me because this was something I originally only shared with people close to me. Eventually, I became comfortable enough to offer that part of myself to others, and it has allowed me to create some very meaningful connections.
I think what sets Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations apart is that when you shop with me, you’re getting a piece of my creativity and personality. I don’t want everything to look like something you can walk into a big store and find on a shelf. I enjoy experimenting, creating unusual pieces, customizing things, and coming up with products that make someone stop at my booth and say, “I’ve never seen that before!”
I’m also not afraid for my business to evolve. I may start with one idea and discover another passion along the way. Instead of seeing that as a weakness, I’ve learned that it’s actually one of the things that makes my brand who we are. **Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations is about having the freedom to create.**
Brand-wise, one of the things I’m most proud of is how personal the business has remained as it has grown. My daughter inspired the name and was a huge part of why I began creating in the first place, so there will always be a piece of my family behind the brand. My family is still very involved and supportive of what I do, from helping me prepare for events to giving me the time I need to create.
I’m also proud that I’ve continued to learn instead of being afraid to try something new. Many of the things I offer today weren’t part of my original plan. They came from curiosity, teaching myself new skills, listening to customers, and simply asking myself, “Why not try it?”
When someone supports Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations, they’re supporting more than a product. They’re supporting a mom, a family, an artist, and a small-business dream that started during a very uncertain time and continued to grow.
Whether someone comes to me for a handmade creation, a unique gift, something customized specifically for them, a sweet treat, or a spiritual reading or cleansing, I want them to leave feeling like their experience was personal.
Most importantly, I want people to know that Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations is still growing. I’m proud of where the brand started, I’m proud of what it has become, and I’m excited about everything that is still ahead.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I think the handmade and creative industry is going to become even more personal. People can buy almost anything online now, so I believe customers are going to care more about the story behind what they purchase, who made it, and whether it feels unique to them.
Technology and AI are going to continue changing the way small businesses operate, but I actually think that will make handmade work even more special. There is something different about knowing an actual person created, painted, designed, baked, or customized something for you. I think customers will continue looking for those human connections and one-of-a-kind pieces that don’t feel mass-produced.
I also see customization becoming even bigger. People want items that represent their personality, family, interests, or even something they’re going through in their lives. That’s an area where small businesses have an advantage because we can listen to our customers, create something specifically for them, and give them an experience that a large retailer can’t always provide.
I believe social media will continue changing the industry as well. Instead of people simply seeing a finished product, they want to see the person behind the business. They want behind-the-scenes videos, the creation process, our stories, our families, and the reality of running a small business. I think shopping will become even more connected to content and community.
I also believe there will continue to be growth around spirituality, self-care, and people wanting meaningful experiences. That’s one reason I’m excited to continue developing the spiritual side of Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations through readings and cleansings while still staying true to the creative side of my business.
For my own brand, I see the next several years being about growth without losing the personal touch that got me here. I would love to continue expanding my products and services, reach more people online, participate in bigger events, and eventually continue growing Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations into something even larger.
Trends will always change, and I’m sure five or ten years from now there will be things we’re doing that we haven’t even imagined yet. That’s what excites me. I’ve never been afraid to learn something new or allow my business to evolve.
No matter how much the industry changes, though, I think people will always appreciate something made with intention and a story behind it. That’s something I never want Magical Rainbow Sloth Creations to lose.
