Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Drone.
Hi Michael, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been drawn to storytelling, but I didn’t take the traditional path into filmmaking. I started as a comic book artist, learning how to draw, write and tell a story with my imagination. Over time, that naturally evolved into an appreciation for film, where I realized I could tell much broader stories through moving frames, sound, and video editing.
I co-founded fNscene Productions because I wanted to create work that felt intentional, cinematic, and inspiring. What started with music videos, events, and local projects gradually grew into working with businesses, nonprofits, universities, and brands that wanted more than just a video. They wanted something that communicated who they were and why their work mattered.
Along the way, I’ve worn just about every hat imaginable. Filming, editing, photography, marketing, web design, SEO, and even learning graphic design to better serve clients. Running a creative business has taught me that being a filmmaker today is about much more than creating beautiful visuals. It’s about understanding business, solving problems, and helping clients see a return on their investment.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like a lot of creatives, I started out thinking that if I became great at my craft, the clients would naturally come. I quickly learned that running a business is a completely different skill than making great work.
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing a full time job while trying to grow fNscene Productions. There are only so many hours in a day, and it’s easy to feel like you’re making progress in one area while falling behind in another. On top of that, the creative industry is incredibly competitive, and it’s easy to compare yourself to others or get caught up in chasing perfection instead of actually putting work out into the world.
I’ve also learned that saying yes to everything isn’t sustainable. Early on, I took on almost any project that came my way. Over time, I’ve become much more intentional about the type of work I want to create and the clients I want to partner with. That shift has allowed me to focus more on commercial storytelling, brand content, and marketing driven video production instead of trying to be everything to everyone.
Every challenge has forced me to adapt. I’ve invested time into learning marketing, SEO, and web design because I realized clients aren’t just looking for someone to operate a camera. They’re looking for someone who can help them solve business problems through creative storytelling. That mindset has completely changed how I approach my work.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about fNscene Video Productions?
fNscene Video Production Company | Kansas City is a video production and marketing company that helps businesses tell stories that drive results. We specialize in commercial video production, brand storytelling, corporate photography, and marketing content that helps organizations build trust and connect with their audience. Whether it’s a brand documentary, a company overview, event coverage, or a commercial campaign, our goal is to create content that has a purpose beyond just looking good.
What sets us apart is that we don’t approach projects as just videographers with cameras. We think like marketers first. Every project starts with understanding the client’s goals, target audience, and how the content will actually be used. A great video isn’t valuable if it never reaches the right people or supports a larger business objective.
At the end of the day, our mission is simple. We want to create work that people remember. Whether we’re working with a local nonprofit, a growing business, or a larger organization, we believe the most effective marketing comes from authentic stories told well. If readers take away one thing, I hope it’s that video isn’t just an expense. When done strategically, it’s one of the most valuable investments a business can make.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that execution beats perfection every time. Early in my career, I spent a lot of time waiting for the perfect idea, the perfect equipment, or the perfect opportunity. Looking back, the biggest moments of growth came from simply putting my work out into the world and learning from the response I received or didn’t receive. “Why does my work look like this and theirs looks like that?” Comparison isn’t always the thief of joy. Sometimes it helps you aim higher for your work and learn and unlearn good and bad techniques you’ve become content with using.
I’ve also learned that your work in this industry only exists if people know where to find it. As creatives especially in Kansas City, it’s easy to focus entirely on making better videos or taking better photos because social media is where people believe the competition lies, but marketing is just as important outside of Instagram. Some of the best opportunities I’ve received didn’t come from networking, social pages, or even word of mouth, they came from being visible where people search. If you needed roofing, plumbing, or electrician services would you search on Facebook, Tiktok, Instagram, or a real search engine? It’s all about the psychology of how a client or customer would search for your services, particularly if they have a high intent to book.
More than anything, I’ve learned that success is less about one breakthrough moment and more about small, consistent actions over a long period of time. Every project, every client, and every challenge has taught me something new. That mindset of always learning and always improving is what continues to push both me and fNscene Productions forward.
