Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Carter.
Hi Marissa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was first introduced to the business by a coworker when I was working as a server and bartender. I kept noticing that she was losing weight, had more energy, and was making extra money on the side. It caught my attention because at the time I was feeling really unhappy and unfulfilled in my own life. I always knew I wanted to learn, grow, and make a difference, but college never felt like the right path for me. I didn’t want to go into debt for something I wasn’t even sure about.
When I saw what she was doing, it opened my eyes to a different possibility. I started learning more about the business and quickly fell in love with the idea that you could help people improve their health while also building something for yourself.
My journey hasn’t been easy. I spent time living in Arizona where I continued to build the business, but I didn’t own a brick-and-mortar location yet. After a failed marriage, I moved back to Missouri as a single mom, determined to rebuild my life. In 2021, I took a leap of faith and purchased NKC Nutrition.
Over the years, I’ve faced many challenges. I went through two abusive relationships back-to-back while trying to raise my children and build a team. There were many days where I genuinely didn’t know how I was going to survive or keep everything together. The turning point came when I started attracting team members who truly believed in the vision. We locked arms, supported each other, and began building something much bigger than just a business.
Since then, the growth has been incredible. Our organization has duplicated multiple nutrition clubs, and we have a vision to expand even further. Over the next five years, our goal is to open 30 more locations across the country.
For me, it’s about more than just business growth. It’s about spreading health throughout communities and creating opportunities for others. We focus on helping people improve their wellness while also teaching leadership and giving our team members a pathway to financial freedom.
What keeps me motivated is constantly staying connected to leadership training and personal development. Seeing my team get excited, grow, and achieve things they once thought were impossible pushes me to work even harder. But more than anything, my family is my biggest motivation. I’m working hard today to create the kind of lifestyle I only dreamed about having when I was a kid.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, my journey has come with a lot of personal and professional challenges. Over the years I’ve navigated two abusive relationships back-to-back while trying to grow my business and raise my children. I was also rebuilding my life as a single mom of two while taking on the responsibility of owning and operating NKC Nutrition.
There were many moments where I truly didn’t know how I was going to keep everything going, but those experiences taught me resilience and pushed me to keep moving forward. One of the biggest turning points was finding team members who truly believed in the vision and locked arms with me to build something bigger together.
In the midst of everything, I was also blessed to meet my husband, and together we’ve faced our own challenges, including experiencing two miscarriages. That was another difficult season in our lives, but it strengthened our faith and our commitment to the future we’re building together.
Looking back, every struggle has shaped me into the leader and business owner I am today, and it’s given me an even deeper passion for helping others create better lives for themselves.
We’ve been impressed with NKC Nutrition, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
NKC Nutrition is a community-focused wellness club in North Kansas City centered around helping people live healthier, more energized lives. We specialize in nutrient-dense protein shakes, energizing teas, and wellness evaluations that help people better understand their health and create simple habits that support their goals. But what we do goes far beyond just serving drinks.
What really sets NKC Nutrition apart is the community we’ve built. When people walk through our doors, they’re not just coming in for a shake or tea—they’re stepping into a supportive environment where they feel encouraged, motivated, and connected. We’ve worked hard to create a place where people can show up exactly as they are and leave feeling better than when they walked in.
We’re also very known for the energy and creativity we bring to our menu and events. We love creating fun themed drinks, seasonal menus, and community events that keep things exciting for our customers. At the same time, we focus heavily on education and leadership development, helping people not only improve their health but also learn how to build businesses and create opportunities for themselves.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the culture we’ve created. NKC Nutrition isn’t just a business—it’s a place where friendships are built, confidence grows, and people discover what they’re capable of. We’ve been able to duplicate multiple nutrition clubs within our organization and continue to grow a team that shares the same vision of spreading health, leadership, and financial freedom.
What I want readers to know most is that NKC Nutrition is about impact. Every shake, every tea, every conversation is an opportunity to help someone feel better, believe in themselves, and move closer to the life they want.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I definitely didn’t build this alone. A lot of the credit goes to the mentors who helped guide me along the way, especially Brad Harris and Bill Meisner. Their leadership, training, and belief in the vision of what this business could become helped shape how I lead my team and grow the organization today.
My team also deserves a tremendous amount of credit. They believed in the mission, locked arms with me, and helped bring the vision to life. The culture and community we’ve built wouldn’t exist without the people who show up every day and pour into others.
My family has also been a huge source of support through the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. And my biggest supporter is my husband. Having a spouse who truly believes in me and sees the vision of what I’m creating has made such a difference. His encouragement and support have helped me keep pushing forward even during the most challenging seasons.
At the end of the day, this business is built on people, and I’m incredibly grateful for the mentors, team members, family, and community that have supported the journey.
