Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucky Perez.
Lucky, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
One year ago, I started on my chicken adventure, and I never would have guessed how much it would be changing my perspective on my life. It’s given me the yearning to learn about and from more traditional farm animals. Best of all, it’s lead to the motivation and confidence of me thinking, “Maybe I can run something, maybe other people will love these eggs and girls as much as I do.” That’s motivated me to start up Hoops & Hooves Farm to try and spread the deliciousness and wholeness of some quality food around KC!
These girls and our journey together have gifted me a path that I never would have believed in for myself if they didn’t come into my life. I’m so grateful and excited for that.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Each struggle I faced so far has been nothing short of an extreme learning experience. A major flood happened and we had to pick the girls from waters almost up to their head! Most of them jumped on something and had created their own sort of raft, which was hysterical and a reminder of how smart they are! I’ve had one of my dogs, unfortunately, jump two fences and had gotten one of the chickens during their free-range time. That was a terrible reminder that I’m the only one keeping these girls safe. They’re protection is up to me. I’m happy to report there hasn’t been any struggles on the business side of things but I’m sure there will be more learning experiences to come.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I offer local fresh egg delivery in and around Kansas City. What makes our eggs unique is that they are unwashed, not refrigerated and straight from coop to carton. Since they’re not refrigerated, it’s guaranteed our eggs are never more than one week old when they get to your front door. What I’m most proud brand wise, is how good these eggs are! It really is a testament to how well these chickens are taken care of and how happy they are! I want Hoops & Hooves to grow and offer other animal products/byproducts that people can just tell how well that animal is living and how happy they are.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I, unfortunately, don’t have any advice regarding mentorship. I’m new in this, so I feel as if I can’t help right now. Instagram and Facebook is how I network, promote and get my purpose out. I hope to soon find mentors in local farmers’ markets. I would benefit immensely from their knowledge and experience.
