Exploring Life & Business with Lisa Bergeson of Sunflower Therapy Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Bergeson.

Hi Lisa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was always interested in working with children and at first thought I wanted to be a teacher for many years. I then talked with my Aunt who was a speech language pathologist. After learning more about the profession and shadowing some professionals in my hometown of Dubuque, Iowa, I got my undergraduate degree form Truman State University and then my Master’s from the University of Northern Iowa.

Early on, I was drawn to work that blended creativity, problem-solving, and human connection. Over time, hands-on experiences—both professional and personal—shaped my understanding of how individualized, strengths-based support can truly change outcomes. I have worked in the early childhood setting for 20 years. After I got my clinical doctorate in 2024, I opened my own speech therapy clinic, Sunflower Therapy Solutions.

As my business grows, I seek opportunities to innovate, collaborate, and advocate, especially for learners who need things done differently. Each step built on the last, leading me to where I am today: doing work that aligns with my values, centers people and families first, and continually pushes me to learn and evolve.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a relatively smooth process. At first I had a slower than expected start but as I gained referrals and made business connections with some local preschools in the area my caseload has soared. Now I have my sights set on moving my clinic from my home office to a office location and adding additional staff and collaborating with other professionals.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sunflower Therapy Solutions is known for individualized, child-led, and strengths-based care, with particular expertise in speech and language development, AAC support, early communication, and neurodiversity-affirming practices. We specialize in meeting children where they are and building communication in ways that are functional, motivating, and respectful of each child’s unique profile. Rather than a one-size-fits-all model, we focus on practical strategies families can use in real life, every day.

What sets us apart is our family-centered approach and our commitment to education and advocacy. We don’t just work with children—we partner with families. We take time to explain the “why” behind what we do, coach caregivers with confidence, and create plans that fit naturally into routines. Our therapy is intentional, evidence-based, and deeply human.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of the trust we’ve built. Families know Sunflower Therapy Solutions as a place where their child is truly seen, where progress is celebrated in all its forms, and where compassion and clinical excellence go hand in hand. Our brand represents warmth, growth, and possibility—just like the sunflower itself.

I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with my clients and their families. Trust, collaboration, and genuine connection are at the heart of my work, and I believe meaningful progress happens when families feel heard, supported, and valued. Walking alongside them—celebrating growth, navigating challenges, and honoring each child’s unique journey—has been the most rewarding part of what I do.

What I want readers to know most is this: we believe every child deserves a voice, and every family deserves support without judgment. At Sunflower Therapy Solutions, our services are designed to nurture communication, confidence, and connection—helping children thrive and families feel empowered every step of the way.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is seeing genuine connection and growth—especially when a child finds their voice and a family feels hopeful and confident again. Building trusting relationships, celebrating small but meaningful wins, and knowing that the work we do carries over into everyday life is incredibly fulfilling.

I’m also deeply happy when families feel understood and supported, not judged or rushed. Creating a space where children are seen for who they are—not just their goals—and where caregivers feel empowered makes the work meaningful. At the end of the day, happiness for me comes from purpose: doing work that aligns with my values, allows for me creatively provide services and target goals, and helping others thrive through playful and fun activities.
