Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Gillett.
Hi Kyle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a KC native. I was homeschooled through high school, went to college at William Jewell, and attended medical school at KU. I am now raising my own family here, and I practice holistic medicine at my clinic Gillett Health and have a podcast. I’ve known since I was a teenager that I wanted to practice medicine. Growing up, I saw how happy my father, Mark, was caring for and praying for his patients. He practiced at College Park Family Care Center, a faith-based practice focused on missions. I tailored my education to become particularly adept at common but underrecognized and undertreated pathologies. Examples of these would be obesity, subfertility, and hormone pathologies. Being a lifelong learner is paramount to serving the public while staving off burnout in professions like medicine. Burnout rates are high, and public trust is deteriorating with the average medical doctor. Each person is a unique individual, and I approach them accordingly. This is why I call my clinic “Individualized Medicine.” After each treatment algorithm or expert opinion on meta-analyses and systematic reviews, many fall into a category without a specialist. Those desiring “functional medicine” are often in this category. Those were desiring optimal health also are. It is common to hear a patient state a symptom but be dismissed after an initial lab workup.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
I had dreamed of working alongside my father in the same practice (College Park). However, I found it very difficult to provide optimal quality of patient care in the “traditional” model, including a co-pay for each visit, seemingly unnecessary visits given that there is only reimbursement if a visit is coded, and utilizing insurance “authorizations” for whatever the patient needs, essentially asking permission. Instead of ten minutes with each patient, I now utilize 30 or more minutes per visit and no co-pays for visits or messaging/form fees. Leaving the practice, I always figured I would work for took a lot of work. However, God is blessing the new practice, and I enjoy reaching underserved groups (many of our patients have conditions like PCOS, PTSD, subfertility and infertility, recurrent miscarriage, etc. We also have many patients in underserved demographics like military, EMS, and extreme athletes). While we take all insurances (out of network), uninsured and underinsured patient populations often utilize our Direct Primary Care (DPC) and Individualized Medicine clinics to get high-quality care. While I did enjoy volunteering at various FQHC (safety net clinics) and doing missions in the past, God has helped me realize that our city has needs right here, and much of my calling is providing and “growing a new tree” to support both the patients and employees and families affiliated with Gillett Health.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We provide holistic, individualized care to our patients. The practice includes preventative medicine, aesthetics, sports medicine, hormone optimization, obstetrics and infertility, functional medicine, precision medicine, and genomics. We believe that each human is a unique creation that requires attention to their body, mind, and soul. It is unique that we use shared decision-making and an evidence-based approach, ensuring each patient’s voice is heard and cared for well. I firmly believe “food is medicine” and “exercise is medicine.” We integrate the “7 pillars of health” into the patient plan. These include exercise, diet, sleep, stress, social, sunlight, and spirit. These are more powerful than any medication or supplement. We do offer primary care. We also provide specialized care, which we call individualized medicine; examples of services are listed above or on our website, gilletthealth.com.
What matters most to you? Why?
I enjoy thinking about metaphysical desires. Fortunately, on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, most basic needs are met in this country. I enjoy finding purpose in almost any task while still realizing what God desires for my life is something I can learn to love. The effort of achieving that can feel good, just as I can learn to love the effort of lifting a weight in a gym.
