Exploring Life & Business with Kim Shiu of Tidy for Good

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Shiu.

Hi Kim, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It’s been a long journey to establishing my own business, but looking back at my past has given quite a few signs that I am where I should be! I’ve always loved helping others tidy, from my childhood neighbor to my friends during my service in the Peace Corps abroad. I first read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing in 2015, and thought, “Wow, this author is extreme.” I simply read the book and did nothing with the information. Fast forward to New Year’s Day of 2019, and I watched her Netflix show, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, and this time something clicked. I started re-examining my relationship with my physical items and letting go. Going through my own KonMari® Tidying Festival has allowed me to say goodbye to the things that weren’t serving me and to honor the things that I truly want in my life. Then I started thinking more about helping others become organized.

I became certified in Marie Kondo’s tidying method in 2024 as a KonMari Consultant, and started taking on organizing clients and established my professional organizing business, Tidy for Good. In 2025, I officially quit my public health job and now take on clients full-time. I’m a Certified KonMari™ Consultant and professional organizer here in the Kansas City area, but I also provide virtual organizing.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I am constantly learning! Each client presents a new learning opportunity for me, and it’s always nice to make a new friend. Professional organizing businesses can be so different across the spectrum, especially if you specialize in different aspects. Owning my own business has also been challenging but really rewarding. It’s been good to find mentors and accountability partners to bounce ideas off of and get guidance.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Tidy for Good?
Tidy for Good is my professional home organization business. I serve the greater Kansas City metro, but I also have virtual sessions for those that aren’t in the area. My goal is to transform my client’s lives using Marie Kondo’s KonMari Method® of organizing and tidying. I absolutely love helping clients figure out their vision for their ideal lifestyles and dig out of their clutter to find what truly sparks joy in their lives! I also provide workshops and presentations to organizations that are interested in learning about decluttering, tidying and organization.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’m definitely not a risk taker usually, but the biggest risk I’ve ever taken has been quitting my public health job to pursue professional organizing full-time. Seeing the results in my clients’ lives and homes makes taking that leap all worth it!
