Exploring Life & Business with Kelsey Barnes of Barnes & Peony LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Barnes.

Hi Kelsey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I graduated hair school in 2011 from House of Heavilin in Blue Springs, Missouri. From there I worked at a Sports Clips for a very short time, until I found out I was going to have my now 13 year old. I found a job in banking and then had several different types of jobs before getting the opportunity to work at a salon in Lee’s Summit years later. Building my clientele by continuing my education and always staying hungry for more knowledge. I always give my guests their time in my chair by focusing on them and delivering hair they want while not compromising integrity and giving an elevated luxury service. By doing so, I built my clientele and grew beyond imagination. I have now opened a salon suite with another stylist in Lee’s Summit located in Summit Fair shopping center at Image Studios.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not a smooth road by any means. Having to take a step back to provide for a family and putting my dream career aside for over a decade, really put into perspective a lot of things. I earned a lot of job knowledge outside of being a hairstylist that has helped me build. It wasn’t always easy stepping back into an industry like this one. Imposter syndrome was a very real thing I had to overcome. I had to gain confidence in my skills, knowledge and in myself in general all over again. In a space that is ever changing and evolving.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a third generation hairstylist, whose mother and grandmother both owned and operated licensed facilities out of their homes. No matter whose house I was at growing up, hair was happening. This is what ultimately brought me to the industry and why my business name pays homage to my grandmother. I really love lived in blonding, formulating reds, and dimensional looks. I also love doing fun razor cuts or a good structured bob. Educating guests on hair and scalp health is very important to me as well as it gives the guest confidence at home to care for and style their hair. This also sets them up for success in the long run. I think what sets me apart from others is just being able to connect with guests in my chair. I truly love hearing about my guests and making them feel seen and heard. It’s not just hair for me. It’s an entire experience and I love providing that to them. Everyone deserves to feel pampered and appreciated.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for anyone just starting in the industry is to remember to stay hungry for education. The industry is ever evolving, don’t get comfy. Evolve with it and you will grow. Sign up for the classes. Your local supply store will have them posted on their website and in store. Invest in yourself I recommend starting commission, and growing your skills and confidence. Make sure you can take clientele with you and carefully read ALL paperwork they ask you to sign. Set personal boundaries for yourself. Lead with kindness but don’t let anyone take advantage of you. Know your limitations and be comfortable finding a way to communicate those with guests and colleagues. There will also be lots of downtime in the very beginning, find a stylist who you feel best reflects the work you want to do yourself, and ask to watch or assist, and absorb everything you can. Good and bad. Write down questions to ask after the service. Make sure you have balance between tasks at the salon like laundry, and getting to shadow and learn.
