Exploring Life & Business with Katherine Solorio of Sweetz By Kat

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Solorio.

Hi Katherine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi! My name is Kat, short for Katherine and I’m the owner and the one who started SweetzByKat based in Kansas city KS. I am 25 years old born and raised in Los Angeles, CA.

I’ve enjoyed baking for as long as I can remember since I was a little girl—what started as a fun hobby in the kitchen quickly turned into a passion that I couldn’t ignore. It’s always been a dream of mine to one day open a small bakery café—somewhere cozy where people can come to study, read, relax, or just enjoy some quiet time with a warm pastry and a good cup of coffee. I imagine a space filled with sweet smells, soft music, and encouraging words—a place that feels like peace.

After a lot of love, prayer, and encouragement from friends and family, I finally took a leap of faith and start off little by turning that passion into a small at-home bakery early this year in January of 2025.

Starting this business was a step of faith, and every sweet treat is a reminder of God’s faithfulness when we trust Him completely. I didn’t only want to just sell my favorite sweets, or to share about my culture it is also about sharing something even sweeter—the love of Jesus. I wanted every treat that leaves my kitchen to be a small reminder of God’s goodness. Whether it’s through a simple card, a verse sticker tucked into your order, or the joy you feel when you take that first bite of my sweets, my hope is that you not only feel full but also encouraged.

One verse that’s guided me through this journey is Proverbs 3:5-6:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

This bakery is more than just about cakes and sweets—it’s a way for me to serve others with the gifts God’s given me, and bring a little more joy to your day. If it’s part of God’s plan for me to have a small bakery café, I know He’ll make it happen in His perfect timing. And if not, I trust that His plan is even greater than mine. Either way, I’m okay walking in faith and doing what I love, one sweet treat at a time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I was very hesitant about entering the bakery business industry for many reasons, I wasn’t ready, I didn’t try to make the time, and I was just anxious. I’m still fairly new to the industry and there is still way more to learn, practice, and overcome. Not to mention I have a full time job aside from my part-time baking, and I still live with my parents so I share a fairly small kitchen with my mom. I know it’s not only a struggle for me but for her as well as I can interrupt her when she wants to cook, or do things in the kitchen and because of this I will always be grateful for her help, support, love, and patience with me. Believe me it won’t ever go unnoticed. I love you Mom <3

That being said, starting out in the baking world hasn’t been easy. It’s been a journey of trial and error, late nights, learning new things on my own, and figuring out how to turn a passion into something sustainable. From getting the right tools, managing ingredients, pricing things fairly, and getting my name out there—it’s all been a process of growing little by little. Some days feel slow, and doubt creeps in, but I remind myself why I started and Who I’m doing it for. Every small win, every returning customer, and every kind message keeps me going. It’s not an overnight success story—it’s a step-by-step faith walk. And I’m thankful for it all.

We’ve been impressed with Sweetz By Kat, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At SweetzByKat we serve sweet treats baked with love, faith, and purpose. Inspired by God’s goodness, every recipe is crafted to bless your day one bite at a time.

I was born and raised here in the U.S., but my roots run deep in both Mexico and Guatemala—my parents’ home countries. Their culture, flavors, and traditions have shaped so much of who I am, and that definitely shows in my baking. That’s one of the things I love most about my baking is how I get to bring my Hispanic roots into everything I make. It’s a big part of who I am, and it’s what makes SweetzByKat feel so special and personal.

Whether it’s adding traditional flavors like dulce de leche, tres leches, cinnamon, or guava, or creating sweets inspired by the desserts I grew up enjoying with my family—this is what we’re known for. It’s more than just baking; it’s sharing a piece of my culture and the warmth that comes with it. Every bite tells a little story of where I come from and the love that goes into each treat.

Because of our roots, SweetzByKat is especially known for our tres leches cakes and light, whipped cream frosting—both inspired by the traditional desserts I grew up with. These flavors come straight from the heart of my Hispanic heritage and are a favorite among our customers. It’s not just about the taste—it’s the comfort, the memories, and the love baked into every bite that make our treats stand out. we believe that every bite should feel like a little blessing—and that’s why we’ve chosen whipped cream frosting as our signature topping. Unlike traditional buttercream, which can be heavy and overly sweet, whipped cream frosting is light, airy, and just the right amount of sweet. It pairs perfectly with our fresh-baked treats offering a smooth, cloud-like texture that melts in your mouth and with plenty of practice and testing different recipes we finally learned how to make a perfect stabilized whipped cream frosting for our Vintage/designed cakes.

Whether it’s swirled on a cake or dolloped on our other treats, our whipped cream frosting adds a touch of homemade comfort and elegance.

Don’t hesitate to try our cakes if you’re not a sweet tooth person. Come taste the difference — simple ingredients, heavenly flavor.

What also makes SweetzByKat different from other small bakeries is the heart and purpose behind every treat. Yes, I put love into my baking—but it’s also about sharing my faith and my culture in a way that feels real, warm, and intentional. Every order comes with more than just sweets—you might get a Bible verse, a reminder of God’s love, or a flavor that brings back memories of a Hispanic home kitchen. I’m not just here to fill your stomach, I’m here to brighten your day and maybe even lift your spirit. It’s not just a business to me—it’s a ministry, a dream, and a piece of who I am.

Every cake is more than just dessert—it’s a testimony of love, faith, and homemade goodness. As a Christian home baker, I pour my heart and prayers into every creation, using high-quality ingredients and a whole lot of grace. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, wedding, or simply craving something sweet, each cake and sweet is custom-made to reflect your story and values. Let us add a touch of sweetness and faith to your next special moment—because every occasion deserves a blessing in every bite.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me about SweetzByKat isn’t just selling baked goods—it’s creating something meaningful. I care deeply about the love that goes into each treat, the joy it brings to others, and the chance to share my faith in simple, thoughtful ways. Including God in my business isn’t just important to me—it’s the heart of SweetzByKat. From day one, I knew I didn’t want this to be just a bakery. I wanted it to be something that reflected my faith and gave glory to the One who gave me the gift of baking in the first place. Every recipe, every order, every moment spent in the kitchen is covered in prayer and purpose.

I don’t take lightly the opportunity to share even the smallest piece of the Gospel through my sweets. I want people to know that God’s love is real, constant, and sweet. This business is my way of planting seeds, encouraging hearts, and reminding others (and myself) to stay faithful in every season.

It’s not just about baking—it’s about building something with God at the center. And that’s what keeps me going.
