Exploring Life & Business with Kali Buchanan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kali Buchanan.

Hi Kali, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my professional career in Kansas City for SFS architecture and then served Hufft as an Interior Design Director. I truly credit both of those firms and the experience they gave me as critical stepping stones to where I am today. After starting a family and craving more flexibility and ownership of the process, projects and my time, I started Kali Buchanan Interior Design (KBID) in 2016. The firm operates with the goal of bringing modern full-service interior design from registered designers to the area in both residential and commercial markets. Our passion is to create spaces that enhance the quality, beauty and experience their users have. We work on projects from conception all the way to furniture installation.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think so much of success in business is based on building a supportive network and an innate entrepreneurial disposition. I’m so grateful to my past experiences and a husband that also started his own company, who provides consistent business guidance. At the end of the day, it takes some guts. The risk is always in the back of my mind inspiring me to continue to grow and push forward and evolve. In the early onset of the Corona Virus, I saw a lot of insecurity but because of our residential ability, we began to pick up steam as most people were confined to their homes and saw the opportunities to improve their settings. Whether it was for work or for relaxation, we saw residential interiors began to renegotiate what was important and how each family best functions in their home. No two solutions were identical. It actually began to affirm our client-focused practice on the residential side.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
KBID operates as a full-service Interior Design firm. We specialize in Modern Interiors for both the residential and commercial markets. Our unique ability to engage on projects from the initial planning through design and drawings to construction and furniture installation allows us the ability to thoroughly engage with the owner or end-user. We really try to partner with clients that see the value of that holistic design approach. Our registered interior designers provide thoughtful space planning, interior material selection, specification and drawings, 3-dimensional renderings, furniture design, selection, specification, installation and construction observation services. We are determined to be a firm based on flexibility and fun partnerships creating beautiful, functional spaces that enhance the quality of life.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
We have over 26 years of collected experience in Workplace, Civic, Public, Religious, Retail, Hospitality, Higher Education, Multi-Family and Single Family Dwelling. We also value great architects and construction partners and see how each of these roles can come together to make a building or home so much greater than the sum of its parts. When it comes to designing a building or home, it’s truly a team effort and we thrive in collaboration with great partners in the architecture and construction arena.
