Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica/Caleb Walston.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a husband and wife owned business, we started with a simple little mistake building a barn door for our own home. We learned and grew from it and started selling different door styles, colors, sizes, etc. all out of the comfort of our garage. We quickly outgrew the garage and moved into an 1800 sq ft shop in the West Bottoms. After 18 months, we moved on to our current location in North Kansas City with another 1800 sq ft. Recently, we expanded into a total of 3,820 sq feet of combined shop and showroom space and are looking forward to serving the KC area with our new storefront showroom!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. We were both health majors in college. Neither of us had any real business or manufacturing experience going into starting the business so we had to learn a lot about both in a very short time. Some of our bigger obstacles have been learning how to ship anywhere from 3 to 7 ft. wide completely custom doors across the country without damages and building processes within our business that can be applied seamlessly from one project to the next as each piece is unique and no two are the same.

As you know, we’re big fans of Walston Door Company. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We make custom sliding interior doors. These are often referred to as “barn” doors. Our doors are completely customizable. We can make virtually any style, size, finish, etc. We’ve even had customers come into our showroom and draw up the door designs they envision for their home. What sets us apart is our ability to help our customers find solutions to closing off that awkward or very large opening that otherwise would require very costly structural changes in the home to accomplish. We help guide the customer through the process from start to finish. Our doors are manufactured from raw material by hand in our NKC shop and we offer free delivery/installation within 25 miles as well.
